Details:

What: 50mm Prime Streetshooting
When: Sun. July 26, 2009
Time: 6PM
Where: Meet at Dundas Square, under the big screen sign at the intersection
Bring: Any type of body with a 50mm prime lens or manual focus prime of 50-59mm

Possible routes:
- Yonge > Queen West > Spadina (Shops, cafes)
- Yonge > King West > Spadina (People in suits, business buildings)
- Yonge > Bloor > Yorkville Area (lots of lights for great bokeh)

We can meet up after at a pub for some drinks and food. I believe 3 hours would be enough walking for everyone so we should meet at 9pm back at Dundas Square.

Technically, a lensbaby is a 50mm prime too.

That's fine.

I'm also going to open this event to manual focus primes from 50mm to 59mm.

Would the sigma 30mm on the four thirds suffice? I think that's close to standard 50mm ;)

I might join, I got a 50 prime since the last 50mm shootout, which I missed by not having it :D

I'll do what I can to be at this event. Nothing on the radar so far and I'm not working that day so this is my priority. Also looking forward to dinner. I've been to a social but this will be my first time shooting with TPMG.

See you soon!

Since there were only 3 other at the last 50mm prime event, I hope this time everyone that agrees to go does such regardless of the weather.

Personally, I like how photos look during the rain compared to very bright days without a cloud in the sky.

Count me in for this event, however I likely will be late...

Got no primes right now...can I tape my 17-85mm lens to 30mm for an approximately 50mm equivalent lens? :D

I'm in, but I may be a little late. Likely by 10 minutes. Hopefully you can wait until 6:15 for the slow?

Hey Eric,

My offer still stand - Crop body + 35L = 48mm....close enough for a 50mm. Just like how your crop + 35L in today's "shorter than 35mm event"! :)

If that's approved I'll be there with a 40D + 35L :)

A nifty-fifty is your answer. Sorry, I don't want to be mean or anything but I stood my ground about the rules before so I don't want to break that. I'll organize normal photowalks soon though.

Fair enough.

Just curious about the logic behind the restriction on "lens focal length" when what really matters is the "effective focal length"? For instance, your 50mm will turn into a 80mm this time which gives you a totally different perspective in shooting but meanwhile members that just wants to join for fun with their "real" 50mm (or close enough) get discriminated.

I am not trying to be mean, but why are you making people buy a new lens (regardless of the price) when they have one already that can do 50mm shooting, when you are the one that's breaking the rule?

Cheers,
Chris

For what it's worth, an ~35mm on crop meets the intent of the event:

Ultra-fast lens, normal FOV.

What if someone decided to show up with medium format? 50mm is a little wide.

Then again, i'm not running the event, so what do I know?

Show up anyway with your 35. I doubt you'll be shunned when you're there. Take it from the official tpmg lens whore: TPMG it's not about the equipment, it's about the people.

I think he's just trying to stick to the theme of using a 50mm prime lens, regardless of the body or crop factor perhaps.

but really, I don't think anyone is going to check your gear then yell at you or something just because you don't have a 50 prime, if you wanna join, join.

...ignore the parameters set for events. Does this apply to rangefinder only, film only, medium format only, large format only and other events that had parameters for participation? Just curious.

Works for me.

Cool. Just wanted to make sure as the host appears to be very strict on that and I really hate to be the one that break the rule. At the same time, I find it not fair to get discriminated when the "theme" is not defined properly.

I'll try to make it, as I might have a last minute bachelor party to attend that evening. I will try my best to get my hands on a 50mm lens (not nifty fifty) so that Eric will be happy :) If not, and if I can make it, i'll be on a 40D + 35L.

well, just think of it like this.

lets say that the theme of the meet up is to "take pictures of people". now, you sure can take picture of whatever you want during the meet up, dogs, flowers, sky, whatever. it won't really matter since nobody would not mind.

however, people are meeting under a certain theme in mind to accomplish something within that scope. pushing the subject at the forum by saying something like "i will take pictures of cats at this walk!" will raise some eyebrows since you're defeating the initial theme of the meet up.

if you want to do something, just do it at your own discretion. why argue semantics over the forum? if you want to meet up you can just show up. follow the theme if you want, don't if you don't want to. not like there is a tpmg police going around kicking your ass if you don't follow the theme... or is there ?
