Hardly a surprise, I guess. I myself hadn't used Kodachrome in years, as their Elite Chrome [formerly Ektachrome] films have a much better low-light response.

Still, it's kinda sad.

Sad, but inevitable. Stock up now.

Besides, only one place in the world develops it... what's to stop someone from starting a niche company to make more film, like with the Polaroid stuff?

At $20 and 4 weeks to process, I gave up on Kodachrome a while ago. Still have a couple rolls of expired K25 that need shooting, but after that, I won' be getting any more.

Polaroid's probably easier to make. And Dwayne's is shutting down their K-14 line at the end of 2010.

i remember shooting kodachrome for the first time in high school (yearbook was all B&W) but I used it as an excuse to shoot colour on the school's budget... used it to capture familly photos in the summer, primarily trips and birthdays... my dad shot kodachrome for birthdays - a bunch of cousins and I have summer bdays and used it in his Canon FTb...

I have a single roll left that I'm going to use to capture my daughter's first birthday party in early August... i'll have the slides mounted and I'll show them to her using my old slide projector when she's a bit older...

at $20 a pop for process it's a big much but i'm willing to pay a bit more for nostalgia..

My fond memories of Kodachrome was my dad's slide photos of us as kids. They still have the slide tray's, and every now and then, I borrow a projector from work, and we sit and watch the old slides.

Currently, my favourite film to shoot is E100VS which is Ektachrome. I wonder if they are going to stop making that too?

"Momma don't take my Kodachrome away...."

At least I still use a camera that has a Kodak sensor and its rich colours.

Kodachrome
They give us those nice bright colors
They give us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world`s
A sunny day
Oh yeah!

Off topic, but I wish I still had my Kodak Motormatic 35.

Someone must built a plant in China to make Kodachrome knock offs!

I remember there was a brand that did imitation Tri-X!!!

Whoever makes it, will make millions!

To bad the stuff is really complicated to make & needs special chemistry, otherwise a Chinese knock of wound of been doable.

You underestimate the Chinese.

I worked in Saudi Arabia in the early '80's. I spent one week a month in air conditioning and the rest of the month in camps around the kingdom.

My first roles of Ektachrome green shifted something fierce in the heat. Then one of the Canadians I worked with found where to buy Kodachrome in Riyadh. The K was rock solid under the abusive heat it was subjected to. It captured some great memories for me.

if anyone is still interested in getting kodachrome at regular price, I saw a post on RFF saying that it is in stock at B&H now. I went and checked and both regular 64 and pro were in stock.

I thought about ordering but I just don't do slide films much and since I never used it before, no nostalgia factor for me as well.

shipping from b&h was about 40$ for 20 rolls. better than ebay prices! might be a good investment to sell around next year lol.

You underestimate the chemistry involved. K-14 is a very baroque process, a line essentially requires 3 chemists to run.

It's the processing, not the manufacturing, that killed Kodachrome.

Considering there is only one lab that develops it, it's a wonder it wasn't axed years ago. If photographers had supported it then I think it would still be manufactured, Producing a knock off in china does no good if there aren't labs to develop it at a reasonable price point.

Mawz beat me to the punch line.
