They announced it along with the new 7D. I think I read that it's going to be around $1399 CAD. I believe it's overpriced though..

Yea, I didn't realize they announced lenses along with the 7D. Agreed, the 100mm is a little overpriced. I guess the non-L will have to do for now.
The new 18-135 might be exactly what I'm looking for to replace my XSi Kit Lens.

Listed at $1299.CDN at Aden Camera. Pretty much what I figured it would be priced at considering it is using the new hybrid IS technology.

For the price of 2 Non-IS 100mm, you can get 1 IS version... It's a tough sell.

Yeah, I was hoping it would be in the $1000. range give or take $100. Even $1200 was kinda the outside limit of what I would consider but at $1300., I'm going to have to think hard about it. Seeing that I already own a Sigma 150mm macro I'm in no hurry to get one.

usually the build quality make L lenses more expensive...like glass, body, coatings on glass, weather sealing, etc...and also to pay someone to paint a red line on it too :P

the new IS isn't only for panning shots, it also compensates for up and down movement

100 macro is roughly $600...the new L version with IS would definately be at least double this price (which it is)

no one wants to pay that much but the price makes sense to me

Yeah, the price is a bit of a shocker, considering that the excellent Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 VR macro can be had for just a little over $900 in town, and it comes with a lens hood (the Canon one does not). I'm not really convinced Hybrid IS will help all that much for macro work anyway.

My Nikkor 105VR is on CL ;) I'm betting that Hybrid IS on this will be usable at Close distances, hand held. Not that much so with the 105VR (it's great for portraits though).

BTW, this is up for pre-order @ Aden for $1300:

Cheers,

Sabesh.

I believe the Nikon 105VR was about this price when introduced, so it's not so bad when you think about it. If you wait a couple years, the price will come down, like everything else.

CAD $25 cheaper @ TCS and only 5% taxes + free shipping:

http://www.thecamerastore.com/products/ ... -macro-usm

However, I prefer local, so pre-ordered via Vistek online a few days ago. A word of caution: Vistek online rep will tell you that your CC won't be charged until it's shipped. However, it does get charged immediately in full. I didn't bother arguing, as I can cancel and get it reimbursed any time. Cheers.

I've pre-ordered mine through Amazon -- my CC was already charged as well $1132.68cad was the total damage. I hope this lens doesn't disappoint.
