The people who put on the above show this past weekend are putting on another one this year:

- Toronto International Camera Show
Sunday November 23rd 10am-3pm
Thornhill Community Centre
7755 Bayview Ave.
Admission $7
The YRT "91-Bayview South" bus stops in front of it; on this past trip I found out that you can also take "2-Milliken" and it also stops at Bayview/John.

I think there are usually 4-5 Thornhill shows per year. I've had some great deals at those shows but it can be variable. This year I'm going to hold out for the Woodbridge show.

So did anyone pick up anything cool at either the Thornhill or the Woodbridge show?

Yesterday I bought a few rolls of expired film:

On a related note, does anyone know if there is someone in town that develops AGFA fb & w slide film?

Thanks!

J

Do you mean Scala? Nobody in Toronto can do it. I don't think you can get it developed anywhere any more. But it will work in traditional b&w chemistry.

I have been helping on the farm at home all weekend, and managed to duck out during an extended lunch to check it out, so I was there ~12:30.

Best thing I picked up at the show was a Wein SST (Super Sound Trigger)...it's a gadget that fires the flash when a sound is heard, like a balloon popping, water drops, or glass breaking.

I was contemplating building one myself, but was glad when I found one ready made.

I have to ask...why are you guys buying expired film? I'm guessing there's more to it than it being inexpensive.

If the film was stored properly (read: in a fridge/freezer) and not too expired, you can often use it well past the expiry with little to no ill-effects. According to the guys selling the film, it was indeed fridge-stored.

And at $1 a roll, usable film is great for experimentation! :D

You can get Scala developed -- there are a few labs in Europe still doing it, as well as a lab called Main Photo in the USA (can't remember exactly where it's located). The DR5 lab in Denver, CO will process it in their own B&W reversal process.

There didn't seem to be much B&W film at the show, but certainly lots of colour. I got 40 rolls of pro colour slide and neg film (all 2006 or 2007 expiry dates) for $40. Good stuff!

Umm...you need something else as I do have a flickr account yet still get a "This page is private" message. I'm presuming you need to join that ontariophotocollective group?

Anyone know what is the 'ontariophotocollective' group? It sounds interesting to join regardless of the coupon.

It's a camera/photography related flea market. You don't know who will be there or what they will have for sale.

It's mostly used equipment, a lot of film equipment, surplus equipment, etc., books, old prints, antique cameras (more than 40 years old), etc. Don't expect new equipment there, unless it's not current (like a two year old new body).

Personally I've been pretty lucky at these events, but I mostly look for gadgets rather than new products.
