Funny that you say that! I titled it Hot On Yonge. Her Boss actually contacted me asking if they could use it for their association. Apparently she loves the photo and has it printed in her locker, her name is Senim.

I do not know about Canada practice. But in the States it is definite not allowed to take images of police in action . And definitely no names for obvious security reason.
In this case she may be thrilled about this powerful image

You may have been told that, but I sincerely doubt that's the case. Unless you're interfering with their ability to do their jobs, it isn't illegal. That won't stop them from TELLING you that it's illegal, or even from arresting you, but it isn't illegal in most jurisdictions unless you actually obstruct. Now they could truck out The Patriot Act and make life really difficult for you.....

There is also a website in the US that lists officer's names by jurisdiction. It's public information. The same group that started that site tried to make a Canadian version, but were stopped for privacy reasons.

Let's see the actual reference(s).

As a blanket statement, I know this is not true.

BTW, you have seen the "COPS" show haven't you?

Yeah, that statement is not at all true. I listen to a US based photography podcast once in a while and this issue is discussed every now and then. They make it pretty clear that as long as you're photographing where you are otherwise allowed to (ie, public property, etc) and are not interfering with police work, it's perfectly legal.

This one was taken with a Sigma 30mm f1.4 (before I sold it) on a full frame body, hence the circular black frame.

Let's see the actual reference(s).

As a blanket statement, I know this is not true.

BTW, you have seen the "COPS" show haven't you?

I do some volunteer work with Toronto Police so I asked a couple of senior officers. They do not follow any special provisions regarding photographing police on duty. The existing laws regarding photography in public places and interfering with police performing their duty are what they enforce.

(Although I think the subject photo here is TTC Constables, not Toronto Police)

It's definitely not true that it's illegal to film cops, maybe in some oppressive third world countries but certainly not here or in the states. That doesn't mean cops will be too happy about being photographed, especially when they're arresting someone, but it's nice to hear of a case where the cop was more than happy with the result!

The only thing I've heard in relation to photographing cops is when I was in England, they say that the police can compel you to hand over images as evidence if you took photos of them 'in action', but it's not a matter of them snatching your camera there and then, just taking your name and address and following up later if they think they need your photos for evidence.

Thanks! I actually know Brian very well, he used to hang out at Richmond and Spadina until he lost his leg to diabetes and gangrene - hard to imagine in this day and age but apparently not that uncommon on the streets. I don't see him much these days but apparently he's around Queen and Jarvis quite a bit. Hope he's doing better.

It's not illegal and as long as we want to live in a "just" society it should never be illegal.
