just a fyi rhommel...if you got the lens and the body at futureshop...return it now!!!

buy it from henry's or aden camera, you can get like $400 in mail-in-rebates (offer expires june 30th)

if you buy from future shop you cant get the mail in rebate (its in the fine print)

i got the 40D and the 24-70L recently too and i love both hahaha

Didn't stores like Henry's and Aden raise their prices when Canon put out the mail in rebates? Didn't the prices remain the same in a sense?

Thread I am referring to: http://www.tpmg.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6875

im not too sure what the prices were before...

future shop is selling the 40D for $1350 same as henry's and aden

BUT canon's mail in rebates does not honour futureshop, bestbuy and a few other places

if you want to buy it brand new either henry's or aden.

fyi if you only buy one or the other its only $100 rebate each but if you buy both the 40D and the 24-70L you get $200 each

personally i'd rather buy a brand new item if its going to be my primary gear but thats me hehehe

I believe the consensus after a billion threads is that the Canon 70-200 F2.8 L IS is the best choice as the second lens after the 24-70 IS. :)

Where do you usually need the telephoto? The 70-200 f/4L IS might be an alternative to the f/2.8 IS.

If you mainly use it during the ceremony (inside the church), the subjects are usually still so you can get away with the f/4 IS instead of the the faster shutter speed the 2.8 gives you.

As for isolating the subject (i.e. from the background in outdoors shots), just use the appropriate backgrounds (color/tone wise or distance wise).

One advantage the f/4 does have over the f/2.8 is weight/size (unless of course you don't mind lugging the 2.8 around all day). I would recommend 135 f/2 but you might not like moving around a lot or others might find it distracting (i.e. priest/guests).

In any case, you might want to rent both (for different weddings of course) and test/see how they are in your working methods. Then decide if the pros/cons of each one is worth the price difference to you.

As for a wide zoom, I'm assuming you've only used your 24-70 on a crop body so far. So try it out first on your 5D and see if it is wide enough or not.

lol i upgraded to 5d2 as well...mine was like 2nd wave of shipments

what started as a 40D with 24-70L grew so fast...

i recently got a 70-200L F2.8 NON IS, to me the IS is just added weight and i don't really need it since the 5D2 is so amazing in terms of high iso

in your situation getting a 17-40L and a 70-200L F4 isn't bad

ps. since when was there a 24-70L IS?
