Might help to state which soft boxes you are interested in. I used to use umbrellas with portable flashes and slaves for some location work.

Been using Chimera soft boxes (16x20) with speedlights for years. Just need the speedring and the bracket that the ring and flash are attached to. This is attached to a small ball head for directional control.

You could check out the Westcott Apollo's or Orb's - they are essentially umbrellas with a front diffusion panel - I have used them for years. They take about the same room in a bag as an umbrella - maybe a tad more.

I've got one of the Lastolite ones. Picked it up from Vistek about 5yrs ago. It came in a kit with a boom and it was a collapsable design that folded down pretty compact. Worked really well.

I have another one which is basically a mini softbox you'd use with strobes but it came with a special adapter and ring that allowed you to attach a speedlight to. It had an removable internal diffuser. the drawback was that is took a few minutes to setup and a bit cumbersome if wanted to handhold it on a boom since the flash was not directly mounted to the softbox.
