What: Kearney Dog Sled Races
Where: Kearney - To Be Specified
When: Feb. 8 2014; 11:00am
Bring: Camera, Warm Clothing
Cost: ???
Additional Info: Based on a poll in the Feelers section, Kearney appears to be the most popular choice for another attempt at shooting dog sled races. Hopefully, there will be snow this year. If the weather doesn't cooperate for Kearney, I would like to make another attempt for Haliburton (which would be set up as a separate event).

If anyone is familiar with the area, I would appreciate suggestions for a convenient, easy to find meeting spot. I don't know if there are multiple parking lots or ticket booths. If I don't come up with a better idea, I will likely use the antique snowmobile display as a meeting spot.

According to the schedule the 35 mile race starts at 10:00 AM and the short races starts 1:00 PM (4 mi) and 3:00 PM (6 mi). The big race doesn't start until 5:00 PM. That will be dark. This must be an overnight race. I can't find anything resembling a trail map. No way to plan ahead for spots to go on the trail.

I'm wondering if it would make sense to go up Friday night and stay in Huntsville. I would estimate a 3 hour drive to Kearney from Toronto under ideal conditions.

I do like that idea - or staying over on Saturday night to get both days of races - but I think I would leave that up to individuals to decide. I don't finish work until 6:30 on the Friday, so going up on Friday could be easier said than done for me.

That's what I wrote. Word for word. What's up?

I really seem to have broken the forum now - I seem to have lost the registration. I don't know what I did, but I will try to fix it.

Kearney is a good place to see dog sled racing, unfortunately you will have to walk a long ways to get good pictures. They start at the community centre just before the bridge which we are racing down on the sidewalk. Always thought this was very dangerous as cars are still using the road….no passing positions available unless you are forced off the side walk. Been there done that… It goes along the side walk until you go out of town and now you are in the woods.

The better race for spectators with lots of space to wonder is Marmora. It is held the week before and a lot closer. Again starting at the fair grounds and out into the woods. The walk to the woods is not that far….trails are wide with lots of area's on the side to take photographs. Just a reminder keep back from the edge of the trails, look for a curve and get that team coming around it, keep low and slow movements. A 70-200 would be a great lens.

In addition to the dog sled races there is a lot more activities going on at the Marmor Snofest, check out their web site.

Would others prefer Marmora? It does look like the weather will cooperate this year.

I ended up with other plans for the 1st, so I don't think I can make Marmora.

Marmora does sound like a better bet. Heck, for even closer, and given our winter weather (light snow and -7 tomorrow), the Cannington races Saturday and Sunday are probably a good bet. I can't believe how January flew by this year.

A follow-on FYI: I just panicked and booked a B&B for Saturday night in Marmora. So I will be going up early Saturday morning and coming back Sunday evening. I'm hopeful there will be lots to photograph.
I've got a small car with room for one person, if anyone wants a ride those times.

I do still intend to do Kearney, as I have made sure I can get that day off work. I don't expect to be asked to work next weekend, so I would like to do a day trip to Marmora as well, but can't make the commitment for an overnight. I won't commit to driving there in the winter though.

Marmora was a great outing. I wish the weather would have come through a day earlier (today would be fantastic), but at least we had lots of snow. In spite of that, the driving there and back was on clear/dry highways. There were a lot of races, lots of room on the track and great forest backgrounds. It snowed all day Saturday, so I got a bit wet standing out all day, but I was warm. By Sunday there was more than a foot of fresh snow and we had clear but overcast shots of the races. Just sub-zero temps made the days perfect for keeping warm and comfortable. The races and dogs were the main attraction, although there was chainsaw wood carving and a street performer for kids. I stayed at the Marmora Inn B&B which was fantastic (old house with character, great owners, gourmet food, swimming pool).

p.s., it will be a great long while before I have any pictures up, but I'll put up a link when I'm done in month or so.

I enjoyed it, although it was quite a long drive...

We got on the trails and I was glad that we had some good elevation changes pretty quickly, meaning we could line up some decent shots....
.... which was only partly successful.

Got some decent footage with my GoPro and stayed up too late while editing. Won't be long 'til I manage to post and you'll see what I mean.

It was a lot of fun. As Ben said, we were able to get onto the trails to shoot most of the races. The snow beside the trail was more than knee deep in places - I'm glad I had my snow pants.

Thanks again Ben for driving.

Some great action shots of the sledders Ben, nice and low. But the Skijoring had me in stitches, especially those dogs that had to dragged up the hill.

I agree. Chalk it up to inexperience. Glad you guys are enjoying it.

(I have an even longer ski joring clip. The uphill section is definitely where you don't want to be for this. It was after that I realised that I didn't need 120fps.)

Hey ofermod, great video. You made even the boring parts worth watching. Like that boing boing sound when they fall. The dog sled races with 6 huskie teams were worth the day. Great stuff.
