Cool article. And something applicable to anyone buying any new camera gear!

It's a wake up call that we are mostly mindless consumers of things that we have been told we need or should desire to own. With the commercialization of social media the brainwashing is almost complete. This is neither a good or bad thing it's just the reality as it is now.

So you have your: {first; new; cheap; free; expensive; fantastic;shiny; retro... cell; film; consumer; dslr; rangefinder; pro; (2/3rds, c, full frame) and/or ...} camera so what now? Each one of those cameras as sure as you breath is capable of taking a picture that in the right hands could be a masterpiece.

Now that this camera is in your hands it's time to stop being a mindless consumer! And if you haven't already you may want to evaluate or re-evaluate what your own development goals are and alter your current path to a direction that might result in you achieving them.

If it turns out that you just want a shiny new toy then that's OK. But if you don't use your brain to effect a change then you shouldn't expect any changes.

Son: "But mom!"
Mom: "Son, you know that: 'If you don't eat yer meat, you can't have any pudding. How can you have any pudding if you don't eat yer meat?"
Son: "Don't be quoting Pink Floyd on me again...

No, I get it. There's just nothing new, Zen and the art of finding pure photography I suppose. Seems trite to me, how many times do we need to read pseudo wisdom about looking past gear? How many rich dad poor dad books do we need before we are rich?

Just because we've all read this same type of article numerous times does not make it any less useful, especially for those who have not read such articles before and think its all about the gear.

Just not thinking or knowing "it's not about gear" doesn't make you a better photographer. That is, if you strive to be better... otherwise carry on. Back to that lens review.

Hmmm I suppose that's true that it's probably news to somebody. It's hard to remember that with almost every photographer, wannabe photographer and forum member banging on about it incessantly. Not everyone knows who The Flintsones are. I know you know better. :P

Gear fetishism DOES NOT equal a lack of photographic vision. An oft repeated mistake. It's like stating a mechanic must be a poor driver. For the record I'm more bothered by the lack of logic than I am defending my gear whoring. I own up to that unabashedly.

It also doesn't cause you to have a vision or equate to a vision. The article wasn't anti-gear it just illustrates one persons eureka moment that gear doesn't make up for lack of vision. It might be a trite point to you but I dare say that many of us took a while to get to the point and many obviously still haven't yet gotten the point.

Lead all the horses to water you like the lesson of thirst is self learned not matter how many people lap up the wisdom behind it.
