BRAAAAIIIIINNNNNSSSSS

When: October 26th, 2013 around 11AM
Where: Exact location will be TBD. They're starting in Nathan Philips Square so I expect near there.
Gear: Clothes appropriate for the weather and possible zombie blood (yes, it is possible). Camera stuff is up to you. I've shot three zombie walks (therefore an expert) and found that the 70-200 worked best for me. You may have different results.
Costs: None beyond money for some post walk brains and potions.
After: We'll pick a good pub with speedy service well before the event comes along.

Additional notes: Although I really hope to be attending this the nature of my life right now makes maintaining all committments difficult sometimes. If someone could volunteer to sub for me just in case something comes up I would appreciate it greatly. Please PM me if you can.

I'm hoping to be able to make it to this, but won't be able to confirm until closer to the time.

Interested for sure but will have to decide closer to the date as well. If I can swing it I'll be in for sure

I know I'm posting this early and it's hard to commit so far in advance. Ironically, that's, hopefully, how I manage to keep the commitment. I'm putting my fall schedule together now and it looks like it will be doable. Yay! Looking forward to this event, maybe SyFy Channel will steal more images. Jerks.

Hm. I might finally do one of these. I resented the zombie walk when it was always in my own neighbourhood, but I'm all better now.

So much fun. Wonder if there will be any accidentally ironic protests the same day.

Wow... did you resolve that issue yet or at least try to contact them about it?

No, I have not done a thing about it beyond some complaining on the internet. The reason for this is a combination of ignorance on the appropriate course of action, I'm too freaking busy to figure out what that would be and a sense of futility that there's not much I can do beyond them taking it down without an apology. At least now I can point to them and say "jekrs!" I should figure out this process because they're not the only company currently stealing images from me.

I just read on another photography forum that SyFy is being sued for stealing images from the internet and not crediting the photographers.

While not untrue, this particular thief preceded the web. NBC owns the SyFy channel. The same NBC that gets upset and suey when someone takes their stuff without asking.

While I don't mind talking about how SyFy is evil we shouldn't pollute an event thread with it. Some people probably won't care and don't want to scroll through this to see if there's event updates. My fault, I started it. My original The SyFy Channel is Stealing From Me Thread is here if people want to chat or offer advice. Particularly if someone has a link to a class action law suit. ;)

This looks like a lot of fun! Looking forward to it!!
I guess my typical approach of getting up close and personal with my subject might not work in this case (zombie blood on the camera).

So, can anyone go in and take pictures?

This would be a 1st time shooting an outdoor event or parade like this. What kind of lens would you guys recommend I use?

I have the following;
Sigma 35mm 1.4
Canon 16-35
Canon 70-200

Hi Zudeck,
Yes its an outdoor event and like a parade and free....
If I was you I would leave the 16-35 home and carry the other two.
If you want be very light then leave the 70-200 home as well.
Good luck

Hey Yeshwanth,

Just the 35 really? I would have thought the 70-200, to get close ups etc, from somewhat of a distance. Interesting !!!!

Thank you though, appreciate it :)

I gave you two choices...If you are okay to carry two lenses then carry both... If you want to be carrying one lens then the 35.

Which camera do you have? Is it a crop camera?
For a 1.6 crop, the 35mm (56mm FF equiv) should be fine.
In the past, I've shot using a 50mm on a 1.3 crop (65mm FF equiv).
I'm bringing my 70-200 but I have a full frame.
Examples of 50mm:

As I recommended in the first post 70-200 works best for me. Work at a good distance and get isolation. All the images in my Undead Set were taken with a 70-200 on a Canon 7D (1.6 crop). I have shot a zombie walk with the 24-70, on a 7D, and none of those images made it into that set, that should tell you something. Too wide. If you go too wide you end up with a bunch of distracting crap in the image. Something that happens very easily in a crowd, even if you get in someone's face during the parade. It's unavoidable. So, you end up having to get too close with wide to get isolation leaving you with an unflattering portrait perspective. I am going to bring three lenses to this shoot, hopefully. The 70-200 and 24-70 I own (although I may leave the 24-70 at home, still undecided) and a 85L I will rent. This will be my first time shooting a zombie event full frame. I can't imagine the wider FOV will make me want wider lenses... Maybe you can. Good for you.

That said, if you can convince some undead to follow you to a more interesting environment that changes. The mob that will be at city hall? I'm sticking with portrait lens lengths.

Oh wow. You finally bought a PlayStation 4 !!!! :P :P

I'm looking at going to this too but the nature of my life right now makes my wife's maintenance of my commitments difficult sometimes. :(
She hasn't been able to let me know when or if I'll get there.

Will you post the name of the bar/eatery you'll be going to afterwards?
