http://www.rasc.ca/lpa/torrancebarrens.shtml

A group of us did this the past few years and had a good time.

1 -- The sun to set at 8:31 PM
2 -- A meteor shower called the Perseid during the night

Tim

Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park would probably be a nice spot.
Or anywhere outside of town :)

I don't think I will be able to so this. I think I am just going to be too tired to trust myself to drive home, even if I don't have to work that weekend.

There's nothing like dead silence to tell you to piss off. Have fun.

Sorry Pam, I was hoping to offer a ride. I could have picked you up at Kipling. But a bearing in the rear started to whine last Monday and I haven't been able to get it fixed in time for this weekend. So I held off offering and now I also must drop out as I don't want to do the long drive into the outback with that bearing not fixed. Maybe next year.

Good luck everyone. It should be the perfect year (of course). It is supposed to be clear, the moon should not be an issue and there is a very good chance of aurora borealis activity tonight as well.

I think there is a difference between piss off and just not being able to give you a ride. Just my opinion.
On a nicer note, I was up in Algonquin Park for the weekend and saw an incredible cloudless, moonless sky. Not so many meteors, but the ones I saw were spectacular lasting up to 2 minutes each. Unfortunately I only got a pic the first night and never bothered to take my camera the second.

Thanks to all who made it out. Had a nice clear night. Little cold and damp but nice and clear skies.

I've never seen a Perseid last more than several seconds let alone 2 minutes. Most likely you were seeing a satellite or ISS pass. Definitely not a meteor and if anything, it would be the tail of a bright meteor. This year's shower has been meh from my experience and from others as well. A couple of years ago it was beyond spectacular.

I think the "piss off" sentiment comes from nothing being said. After all, a full car isn't insulting but being ignored is. I hope Pam knows that nobody would intentionally insult her like that, but I can't put words in anyone's mouth so I won't speculate why she wasn't informed there was no seat for her.

We saw a couple of trails ... but they were very faint, and didn't last very long... It was a beautiful clear night on Saturday. But we gave up around midnight and went inside, after having a nice campfire.

When I say they lasted a couple minutes, I mean the smoky white residue that lingered long after the meteor finished its flight.
Great shots Yesh. Ive got to pay more attention to shooting the stars. This is the best I could do.

So Yeshwanth, what's the secret to taking a pic of the milky way? I've tried before and never had it turn out as good as the one you took.

Hi Shaky.......
I am no expert in this. This is my first attempt.... These are things that I followed to achieve this image,
Go north as far as u can to avoid light pollution
There are tonnes of app which will give you the location of the Milky way if you can't spot it...
Set the camera to focus it on infinity, wide open high ISO .....for 30 seconds.
Make sure the sky is clear :P :)
and little bit of Photoshop.

Hope this helps.. or we can go once to shoot the Stars.

Here is a neat little gadget to help get sharper images with longer shutter speeds.

Ions has it right. I don't always expect to get a ride, however, what I also don't expect is for no one to say anything at all hence the phrase "dead silence". There's nothing insulting about a full or disabled car. Sometimes things don't work out, and that's fine. Janet tried to offer but couldn't due to work. That's fine. It's happened before and I understand.

I just expect the organizer to check in with me and ask if I managed to get a ride. I don't like being ignored.
