The new Sony RX1

http://photorumors.com/2012/09/11/sony- ... more-31454

Quite impressive, but also quite expensive! Especially some of the accessories, I mean $180 for a lens hood?!?!

So Hotwire will you be adding this to your kit??

Alas, no. I'll be too busy trying to afford this: http://store.sony.ca/webapp/wcs/stores/ ... 1666485827

And $599 for an OPTICAL viewfinder. Voigtlander sells one for 1/3 the price.... given this piece has NOTHING to do with image quality, I can't see any reason to buy the more expensive one. Unless you REALLY need that little blue Zeiss logo on top

Sony sells an optical finder to be paired with the NEX E-mount 16/2.8, and I'm certain it's actually the Voigtlander 25mm finder with a little adapter to suit the screw-in flash of the lower end NEX bodies (and yes, at higher cost) than the comparable CV.

Interestingly, the 35mm Optical finder looks to be of the same brethren as the finders for the ZM lenses on the Zeiss Ikon cameras, and yet the ZI series does not offer an external finder at 35mm. Also, according to Downtown Camera's website, the ZI viewfinders list (street price?) for $420 typically.

For anyone who is considering buying the 5R, wait for the 5R with 16-50mm retractable zoom lens to come out. According to B+H, they will have them around January 23, 2013 for $800US.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/8 ... gital.html

With all the new Sony cameras entering the market, there are many 5Ns and 7's being sold used..so now is a good time to pick them up. The used models will continue to hit the market as the RX1 comes out in December/January, so there is no rush.

Also, note that one difference between the 5N & 5R is that there is now a control dial for your thumb.

I will also mention that when I used to have the 5N, I was always wondering if it was possibly a bit too small. The 7 & 6 feel like the right size in your hand, but they are bigger and heavier...which defeats the purpose of buying this type of small camera.

...and buy the 3rd party grip attachment if you have an RX100. I expect there will be a grip for the RX1 when it comes out as well.

Where can I go to check out the RX-1? Aden has had it in stock for three weeks now but unfortunately, I can't open it (for obvious reasons). I checked last week and the Sony Store inside Eaton Centre still doesn't have any. Like none. Can't even buy one from them.

For anyone curious, I figured out tonight how to interface an NEX-7 with a studio strobe (there's a setting that decouples the LCD from the metering.)

Don't know if anyone does video here, but I just picked up a used NEX VG-10 camcorder to sort of replace my NEX-6.

Just wanted to say a few things it's a very crippled camera in terms of functions. It shoots 1080p 60i no option to change to 30p, 24p etc. No audio level control despite having a pretty nice quad capsule mic built in, also there's a mic input and headphone out jack, so the audio level omission is baffling.

The last firmware update did give it peaking which I think does add a ton of value to the camera, and make up for some of the software crippling of features. The VG30 is a start-up film makers tool, it's got everything a flimmaker would need to that the VG10 omits.

That said at $550 for the VG10 I'm very happy with the purchase. With the LA-EA2 adapter I can use all my Sony A mount lenses with phase detection autofocus, screw drive or ssm focus motors which is a huge bonus. I also have Minolta MD and Nikon adapters to use those lenses manually, which is where the peaking function is so needed.

It's a nice little unit to with HDMI out, so I can put it on a rig with a 7" display, 3/8 screw on bottem to attach a follow focus and pretty easy menu system. It's quirky but in lieu of a larger budget it's a usable little camera for tripod/slider/dolly shots. Used with a DSLR with audio levels like my a99 it makes for a good back-up camera for b-roll, or for continuous shots for presentations, live events, interviews, auditions etc.

Sony announces A7 and A7r full frame mirrorless E-mount cameras. And lenses for them.

Not sure if they're my cup of tea but it's impressive that they made a full frame mirrorless that is the same size as the OM-D EM-1

You know what's funny? I've been looking at these since the pics leaked and I can't help but think they're ugly. Yet despite me thinking they're ugly I still feel a small urge to use them.

That said I think I like them because they really don't look like any of my dslrs, they're really small and compact and it's full frame. Add the really interesting price point and i'm very intrigued. I also have a few Sony/Minolta lenses I can adapt to these. I'll wait and see how DXO rates their IQ and how the contrast detection(on a7r) and hybrid(a7) work out. If it's decently fast....I might find a hole in my pocket this christmas.

So, who's got a Sony A7 / A7 II / A7R or A7S?

I'm using an A7S.

Thinking of putting together a photo walk if we have enough people.
