Hi,
If you're buying equipment from someone off CL or Kijiji and it's advertised as new and still under warranty, do you insist on getting the receipt? Would it matter that your name wouldn't be on the receipt if you had to provide it for warranty repair?
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers!

I think you would have a hard time getting a warranty repair without the receipt. There is no reason someone should sell you anything that is still under warranty without the original receipt.

The seller says there is private info on the receipt that he's reluctant to disclose, for privacy's sake. I can appreciate that. However, I don't want to be screwed if it'll need warranty repair.
It would be an amazing deal on an awesome lens and I don't want it to be a deal-breaker.

Maybe I should re-phrase the original post; how much would you pay for a brand new 70-200 2.8 VRII without a receipt?

Nikon warranties aren't transferrable.

Yes, I think I recall reading that somewhere, now that you mention it. Perhaps subconsciously I was hoping that was an urban myth. Guess that makes my decision easy; I'll get the lens, insist on getting the receipt and if I need a warranty repair I'll take it to Nikon and say the lens was a gift from my cousin, who's name is one the receipt.

The receipt is what makes the warranty transferable. Whose name is on it is irrelevant, you have the proof of purchase and the lens. Good luck with your purchase.

So turns out warranties *are* transferable. That's good to know. I'll insist on obtaining the receipt.
I'll let you guys know how it all goes down. Thanks for your help, friends!

They are but not in the eyes of Nikon. :) As long as you have the receipt you're good. I don't know if blacking out the private info on the receipt would render it invalid or not. It's probably a credit card # he's worried about and I don't see how blacking that out would invalidate the receipt.

FYI a thread on RFD talks about a camera gear reseller only provide photo copy of receipts.

Oh hey! If you go for it, enjoy the lens! It's a beast, but it's wonderful.

Hehe, great lens. Definitely the best lens I've owned, but yes, it's a beast. Sells for $2049 before tax at Aden; I would probably max out at $17-1800 without receipt. After thorough testing and inspection of course. If you're getting it anywhere around $1500 without receipt, its a steal; probably in more ways than one.

Thanks friends, very helpful insight. If I end up buying it from the seller, the purchase will be "in good faith" with the understanding that the transaction will be legal (for any law enforcement or lawyers out there who happen upon this thread).

Hi friends,
Just an update; the deal didn't go through. The seller found a buyer willing to pay more for it. Which I'm totally cool with. Although it would have been an amazing deal for me, it would have been completely financially irresponsible of me. So I guess it just wasn't meant to be.
In any event, at least something was gained from this thread - the fact that it's unclear whether or not you need a receipt to bring an item in to Nikon for a warranty repair.
A couple years ago, I had brought my SB-600 in to Nikon and I didn't need a receipt. It was *just* out of the warranty period, but they repaired it for free anyway, based on the serial number. I wasn't sure how that worked, but I didn't question it. Perhaps YMMV?

Just curious, how much was this person asking for the lens? I saw a 70-200 vr ii, said receipt included, for $1850 on kijiji, a week or two ago. Cheapests i've seen was $1800 with receipt, but that was a couple of months ago.

The lens was brand new apparently (I didn't get a chance to see it yet). I put an offer in for 1700, and the seller hemmed and hawed for a while, then said ok. The day before the deal went down, however, he found someone who offered him 1750 for it.
Could be that Kijiji seller is the same person who outbid me and is now flipping it.

Ugh, I hate it when online people agree to something then bail on you. Some, many, have no honour these days. :(

Receipt is preferred but it is good to have incase of warranty purposes.
