EXIF data stripped and I was NEVER contacted. Boo SyFy! I thought you were cool in that way (stupid phonetic spellings aside).

I'm disappointed because I've been asked by more than a few people if they can use one, or more, of my zombie images and I've had no problem with it. All were just peeps trying to get some traffic. For a broadcaster's blog to do this? I have not been linked or credited in any way.

You got the first two blog comments. Is that not credit enough?

Sue the bastards!!!

Ok a little extreme - I'd say maybe invoice them or at the least request them to credit your name to the photo!

Good, and correct, suggestions. The problem with just doing is that it makes it too easy to steal and ask forgiveness instead of just asking in the first place. I'd like to shame them a bit by exposing it but I fear I am too small potatoes to do so.

This is why you don't tag your photos and submit it to every group on flickr. I don't condone their actions, but what can you really do about it?

The whole world reads newspapers? I put this up on reddit, they're usually good for decent advice once you get through the cruft. I'm still deliberating what to do though. I may just send them an invoice or I may talk to a couple professors at U of T that are really into IP and related that I currently have access to for their advice. This is an NBC affiliate, not some random Web site. A company, that I am guessing, lobbies for very strict IP laws.

If nice/polite methods fail and you want them to take it down you can file a DMCA notice with them.

Invoicing them is a good idea. I would suggest saying something like "I'd rather not involve my lawyers, so please pay my invoice of x dollars" or some such.

I did notice that the images that had watermarks had their images posted with watermarks untouched. While it's rude, and illegal, to do what they did when you have watermarks on your images at least you get exposure. In the future I will have to make sure all images of mine are watermarked.

Sadly there is seldom ever a WIN with this type of infringement. Its fairly easy to get the image taken down but getting compensation is akin to swimming up a waterfall.

The only two ways I know of to reduce the occurrences of theft are to watermark an image similar to what stock photography companies do. Or, don't post the image. I have had non-obtrusive watermarks trimmed and the images reposted. Some people have no shame.

I agree with everyone. They stole the image, used it for what they needed for when they needed it. Just invoice them, do it as a rights managed commercial invoice starting from the date it was posted and give it a renewal period where you can invoice them again. JOY! You can provide multiple price options and warn if it is not paid then the invoice will go into collections and affect their credit. Who needs a lawyer?

An apology will not suffice when they've already benefited from the use of the image.

I would agree with that too, they've obviously consciously stole the image and striped the metadata.

I have recently had a similar issue, where the person pretended to ask for permission but had already posted the image on Facebook without allowing me a chance to respond. In this case, it's not a large company, but he seems to think that this is perfectly acceptable. He did remove the image from Facebook, but it was there without my permission for 2 days, since I was visiting my Father and wanted to check the website out before responding to his "request'.

Oh god. My zombies are all over Facebook. I'd have to hire people to track them all down.
