What: Grindstone Creek From the Bottom to the Top!
Where: Starting at Aldershot GO Station in Burlington NORTH PARKING LOT.
When: May 12th 9:30AMish (we'll make that more concrete in a couple days).
Bring: Camera Equipment including tripods and various ND filters if you got em. Comfortable walking shoes, rain gear, hip waders ;), bug spray, snacks, money for parking & post creek munching.
Additional Info: Since people enjoyed Grindstone Creek so much at the waterfall event we decided it'd be a good spot of its own. We'll start at the top in Waterdown at Waterdown/Great/Grindstone Falls and hike to the bottom in Aldershot. This will take at least a few hours as we poke along shooting. It is pretty hilly but overall fairly easy hiking. In addition to the creek itself there are forest flora to shoot as well as insects for macro shooting.

We will set this up as a car pool event so that when we get to the top there is a car available to pool us back up to the bottom. Thus attendance is a bit limited.

May is pretty busy for a lot of people, so, if you can't make it this Saturday there is an event in June that will be identical.

Hey Chris

This is a fabulous idea. Unfortunately...

Next Saturday is the 12th not the 19th. I could maybe do the 12th, but I was looking at other plans. The 19th is the long weekend (two weeks away) and is the Tim trip to Presqu'ile. That's the Warbler Festival. If you want to do the long weekend the Monday is the better day for me. Or the 26th. I am putting myself in for May given the days above, although June would be OK.

After last week's trip I pulled out the Bruce Trail Guide and checked the map for the valley below the falls. There is no Snake Falls on the BTG map or mentioned in the description, but parking is identified as being available roadside on Snake Road at the other end of the valley that should work for the car pooling plan. I then checked the Hamilton Waterfalls web page and Snake Falls appears on the maps on that site. Below the main falls (Great Falls) is marked on the map a Grindstone Cascade and Hidden Grindstone Falls which is on a small tributary. Snake Falls appears to be on tributary creek that comes in from NW and is up towards Main Street/Snake Road.

Yeah, I know I've seen em. My apologies for thinking they were closer at the falls event. I'm going for a hike tomorrow morning to confirm the route. I've done it a few times but it has been a while. I will be sure this time. :D

I could probably do May 12, but the timing would be tight as I have an evening commitment, so June would be easier.

I think we'll start fairly early so you would have time for an evening commitment. I'm guessing we'll be finished Grindstone by 2-3PM. I hiked it today and now have a proper handle on the trails. It took me one hour each way with some mild jogging and stopping for five or six quick shots. I think three hours for a small group will be about right. Depending on how many we get and how pokey y'all are. Just a reminder for those that came to the Waterfall event and a warning for those that haven't been - this is a hilly area! It can be a stressful hike! Several of us were pretty beat after just Grindstone Creek at the Waterfalls event.

"Snake Falls" could be the cascade that is just down from Grindstone Falls that we all saw at the waterfalls event. Or, it could be off a side trail heading west from Grindstone that is easy enough to check out. If I have time next Friday I'll do another exploratory hike. Water flow on Grindstone is good and there's a nice deep blue green in some spots. The coming rain this week will only increase flow, hopefully it doesn't turn it to chocolate milk. Foliage has definitely thickened and looks good. The forget-me-nots are starting to bloom, my favourite flower. There are still some trilliums kicking around, though, they are definitely at their apogee and will be fading by Saturday. And there's some other stuff coming up that will be looking pretty good.

While down in the quieter area, that we didn't see at the waterfalls event, I spooked a gorgeous heron. He was gone before I even thought of the camera, not that the 24-70 mounted to a body set at f22 and 1 second and 2 second shutter delay for shooting the creek would have been great for birding... I also spotted a mallard couple. So if someone wants to try some wildlife/birding there may be that possibility.

I'm going to put edit this in the event post but I think we should start from the bottom after we drop a car off at he small lot for Grindstone Falls. For the route it makes more sense, parking wise it makes a lot more sense, and it puts the part we did last time last so we can rush through a bit if we're tired or done.

Hmmm, might be up for this. Let me talk to zeee wife and see if we can scrounge up a car rental.

Oh, also, is this date actually on for Saturday? I noticed that the voting buttons are a bit confusing given there's a button for June, but there's also a June event posted.

Yeah, we're on for Saturday for sure. At least I'm going to be there. :) I'm also doing one in June because a lot of people are busy in May so the second option is a later and the last nonsense one is a no.

You don't have to rent if it's inconvenient. We're meeting at Aldershot GO station which is a 50 minute trip from Union and because parking is cramped at Grindstone carpooling is a plus. I can fit two. The train trip is about $20 return per person though and you're bound to their schedule... maybe renting a car is a better choice.

I'll look at the logistics tonight of what might work better then. I'll let you know. Thanks for the carpooling offer.

If it's sunny on Saturday I'm going to be pissed. I'm still running with no ND filters, though I'll be doubling up on polarizers if it's bad.

I've got a 6stop 77mm nd and a 4stop 82mm and I'm sure I won't be using them both at the same time...and I'm a sharing kind of individual so no worries guys...of course u might have to arm wrestle each other for one...
Here's hoping I don't have to work Saturday

Thanks Mike, that's very generous of you. I'll be sure to push Matt in the creek early to have use of the 77. :D (iirc he doesn't need that size).

On the 17-40 I use a 77 :p. Part of the reason I want to ditch the Sigma 24-70 is because it uses... 82s.

Just a reminder that this is tomorrow morning at 9:30AM starting at the Aldershot GO Station NORTH parking lot. Forecast is a high of 21°C and variable cloudiness, cooler in the morning. Hopefully the bugs won't be out yet. The foliage has really started to come out here too. It looks great. See you there! :)

Thanks to Chris for his Austin Stevens style wrangling.
