I was wondering how many of you D7000 owners have had this problem. The build up of black spots mainly on the right side as seen through the viewer. If you take a shot of the sky and overexpose it with a narrow aperture the spots are very noticeable. Its caused by the lubricant from the mirror assembly that flicks onto the sensor when the mirror pops up. Nikon is aware of the problem and they will fix the problem at no cost. Ive had to send my camera in twice now. The first time they simply wiped off the sensor and sent it back. It didnt take long for the problem to reoccur so back it went. As of an hour ago I was told my camera was in pieces and its being dealt with properly and I should have it back by Thursday.

never had that problem on any Canons I used, let's hope you don't miss the camera too much while it's receiving its spa treatment

The spots might be there but you will really notice them after shooting a light background with a small aperture. The largest darkest spot at the top came back from Nikon after their "fixing" it. And the spots are not dust.

Not dust. Nothing I did would budge those spots. I tried blowing it with the Rocket, I shook the camera. I even put it in the toilet and flushed 3 times. Nothing. So I sent it back.

I've only ever had dust with mine.
But a clean wipe of the mirror/sensor removes all traces.

I would have agreed that they look like dust but can understand how oil would appear.

Hopefully they fix it real good!

It would be really funny to get back a D3 for the D7000 since I traded in a D1 for it.

Such a great camera, hope this doesn't affect to many people, what a shame.

Does not look like dust.

If you look at the specs closely, you can see a halo around the black dots.

From what I understand the mirror assembly has some gears and there was too much lubrication used. When the mirror flipped up it splashed some of the lubricant onto the sensor. This was on a certain run of the cameras. Mine happened to be one of them. I dont know how widespread this is but its enough that the problem can be googled with no problem. When I talked with the Service Dept. yesterday they told me my camera was in pieces and being attended to properly. I can only hope they are right. It doesnt seem to be a big deal if the excess lubricant is removed. It doesnt grow like mold. I will probably end up with a squeeky camera, but the pics will be nice and quiet.

Wow .... well, I hope it comes back all good! Thankfully I do not have this issue with my D7000... and I have done a lot of HDR work with it, so I've never seen anything like this show up in my images.

My co-worker has this kind of problem on his D7000. He has cleaned it himself.

Yes I had this issue with my D7000 bought in March. I didn't check how clean the sensor was until I had the camera for a couple of months. So I assume all the oil that is going to spill has been spilt.

I did my own dry sensor cleaning. I had to swipe across the sensor about 7 or more times. Each time I swiped, I took a picture of the clear blue sky at f22 and looked at the image. The first swipe just smudged the oil spot and it looked like a long streak. After more swipes it got less and less visible until it disappeared.

I used a high quality paint brush from an art store to do the swiping. The problem never returned.

You're lucky it never returned. Or you havent noticed it yet. Nikon wiped the sensor the first time I sent it to them. Thats all they did and it came back with a large spot on it. This time they are supposed to have replaced the mirror unit. They admitted there are gears with a lubricant and so I guess they replaced it with one with less lubricant. I havent put a lens on to test out how it looks but I will do it first thing in the morning. I wouldnt bother cleaning the sensor myself while the camera is new and under warranty. No sense screwing up the warranty trying to fix something that is their fault.

Don't worry too much. Once the loose oil comes off, it shouldn't be a big problem after that.

As I see it the problem might stop for a while, particularly when the camera is cold. But when the weather warms up again the lubricant will be come less viscous and start flying around again. Sending it to Nikon to be fixed is the best approach as long as the warranty is in effect.

YES! I've had one tiny spot on my sensor that is exactly as described, gonna take my D7000 to the service centre and have them take a look at it

Glad to know I'm not the only one with this

I fortunately have experience none of these issues so far with my baby. Knock on wood.

I just checked and I can see one particle that's definitely dust and another that looks much like those you showed us. The camera is still under warranty - if i take it to the service department, will I need to pay for cleaning?
Thanks

Checking the internet for the problem with spotting on the sensor will all show the same look......more than 1 spot. The spots build up as one or more hit the sensor from the mirror lockup assembly. I would imagine the spotting would occur as soon as you bought your camera, or particularly in summer months when the camera gets hot and the oil gets less viscose and easier to flow (splash) on the sensor. I sent my camera to Nikon twice and both times they didnt charge me a thing. The second time they even paid for shipping both ways.

Thank you, Bynx. How did you actually send them the camera? I was thinking of going to Mississauga but is there a better way?

If you can - take it to Mississauga. Otherwise, you can take it in to the store where you purchased it, and they can send it in for repair with Nikon.

If possible take your camera directly to Nikon in Mississauga. They will start to process your order right away. Otherwise, if you go to Purolator/FedEx/UPS the order sits in the shipping area and goes through a long processing period before it even gets to the fixit room. By the way Nikon deals with Purolator if you plan on sending it in.
