As a new member I was curious as to the kind/style of street shooters here.

Thanks :-)

PS - There is a mix of great masters and contemporary, some greats are also missing. If I missed someone you admire please add to the list.

Because you study others to learn? Once you learn you try to understand? Once you understand you try to improve and or critique? Once you improve and or critique you try to do something different? Once you done something different you can truly call something "your style?"

One of my favourites is Toshihiro Oshima - http://www.flickr.com/photos/tommyoshima/

But I found that my peers and the people I shoot with were the ones I learned the most from.

The following four are the ones I consider as my mentors. They really helped me out, especially when I was just starting.

To me Ansel Adams is like the bestest street photographer.

You are welcome to join my upcoming 'street photography' workshop series that i will be hosting here in Toronto in early 2012, perhaps then you can tell me what my "style" is?

Thank you for the invitation Sir but I am in absolutely no position to tell you what your style is, only you know.

I would love to join your workshop and learn from you but I probably won't be able to afford it. These workshops range anywhere between $295-$500 and well into the thousands for Leica/Magnum sessions. For me the most economical way is to study the works of others online and experiment.

Bruce Gilden flash in the face or Bruce Gilden now or Bruce Gilden the early days? Style is related to a period of time.

I admire the humanity of Magnum photographer Eli Reed (missing from your list) but I don't try to emulate him. Then again I don't consider myself a street photographer.

correct me if i am wrong but Bruce Gilden used to drive a cab in NYC and shoot as a hobby... I believe he met or knew someone from the magnum group who championed his entry into the agency.

i think his street approach is a bit harsh, he does tend to achieve interesting results.

If he was a cabbie, that explains why he is able to spot what he calls "characters".

I totally agree with you. When it comes to street, I like the silent assassin with a knife - Chris Weeks style.
