Details:

CANCELLED

What: The American Civil War Experience
When: CANCELLED
Time: 6 PM to 10 PM
Where: Westfield Heritage Village - Parking Lot at 5:45 PM
Bring: mid range telephotos (70-200) are good for reenactments,

The event is less a reenactment and more a theatrical staging. After discussing with Westfield it did not appear to be photographer friendly. I have cancelled this event. And posted a new reenactment event for Black Creek Village on June 18th in the Ad Hoc section.

As some may be aware 2011 is the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War. Westfield Village located outside Hamilton is offering an evening event to celebrate. I have never been to Westfield, but it looks like a very interesting place.

(See posting below for some updates)

From the web site:
Quote:
Join a costumed guide and experience the American Civil War and its Canadian connection like never before during this dramatic evening tour of living history tableaux and battle recreation.

Directions:
Westfield is located at 1049 Kirkwall Road (also referred to as RR 552), Rockton, Ontario, Canada, L0R 1X0.

FROM TORONTO
Take QEW west to Hwy. 403. Turn north on Hwy. #6 to Hwy. #5. Turn left on Hwy. #5 and then right on Hwy. #8 to Kirkwall Road (also referred to as Regional Road 552) just past Rockton. Turn right and follow 1.5 kilometres.

Because this is an evening event we will discuss if there is any interest in a night cap after the event.

As always if you can offer a ride let people know by posting below, and if you need a ride post your need and watch for those who can offer.

Westfield is not very far from Websters Falls and I am thinking of setting up a daytime waterfall event the same day to visit Websters and explore the Spencer Gorge. People could attend both events or just one.

Some additional information:

The phone number provided on the website is wrong. The correct number is 519-621-8851 (I have updated the original posting as well). Thanks to Tim for finding the glitch. I have informed Westfield and they are going to fix the web page.

I have also confirmed that the price of the tickets is $15 and they are selling only 140 tickets.

This program is not being presented as a normal reenactment. The program consists of forming groups and then having each group guided from one scenario set up to the next and at each set up a presentation is made. A skirmish is part of the night's events (this will be much smaller then a battle reenactment). There won't be a camp to wonder through and shoot.

This may not be photographer friendly in the same way that wondering a reenactment camp set up and watching battle reenactments. It will be necessary to move on when the guide moves on with the group.

I thought I should pass on this information as it was not what I was expecting. And I don't want anyone to sign up with the wrong expectations.

Can I ask people if they are still interested in this event given the controlled approach? If this doesn't seem like the right event I will cancel it.

If there isn't an interest in this event would there be an interest in the War of 1812 Reenactment in September (10/11) at the Backus Heritage Conservation Area near Port Rowan on Lake Erie? I went to this event a few years ago and it was great. It is a longer drive and earlier start, but they put on two battles and they usually have a couple of hundred participants.

I have to admit, I am less interested now. I also wasn't anticipating the limited number of tickets being sold - they may very well be sold out by the time I can make a definite commitment.

Another alternative is the Battle of Black Creek - Revolutionary War Re-enactment on June 18. Perhaps I will flip this outing to that event. Closer and TTC accessible. Might be the way to go.

Let me know what you think.

This event has been canceled and a new event posted to go to the Revolutionary War Reenactment at Black Creek Pioneer Village.
