The feedback from the first Pt/Pl print workshop was very positive and there seemed to be sufficient interest to run at least one other workshop.

Roger Hein has agreed to conduct another workshop at the end of February.

Details:

What: Pt/Pl print workshop with Roger Hein (www.rogerhein.com)
When: Sunday, February 20, 2010 (To be confirmed)
Time: 11AM - 5PM
Where: Near Don Mills Subway Station
Bring: Provide digital file (upload to dropbox.com by February 6th). This file will be used to create a digital negative for contact printing.

Cost: $100 (material costs) - a non-refundable deposit will be required to secure your spot (can't afford to have people bail out last minute) (deposit payment details to follow).

In this workshop you will learn how to coat paper with a pt/pl light sensitized solution, mix developer and clearing agents, assemble a contact print for exposure and exposure, develop and clear your own 5x7' print on a sheet of high quality 100% cotton rag paper.

You will leave the workshop with a pigment based inkjet digital negative and a pt/pl print of your image.

Only space for 5 participants and responders to the 'feeler' thread have priority for the first 48 hours (after which I will open it up to the rest of the TPMG membership).

Priority list:

Taylor
mervin106
stephanieKWho
Simon
smlg.ca
lxdesign
Zeekid
Andy
vincedotca

If you are interest, unavailable on the 20th and prefer the 27th, please sign up according.

Giving some time, a print exchange would be nice in the future.

Hi Ken,

Sundays are not good for me. You can give me spot to someone else.

I'd like to participate if all the spots are not taken by those on the priority list.

Feel free to add yourself to the sign up list.

Two 'priority' members have dropped out.

Done, thanks! I'm good for either of the dates you posted, actually.

Is there any homework I should do ahead of time other than prep a digital file? Any expectations of darkroom experience or anything of that sort. I'm a total noob with such things, I've really only used a digital workflow front to back.

Nope - just prepare a digital file which will be used to create a digital negative (Roger will take care of that). Once things firm up, Roger or I will contact with details for the deposit and location of the workshop.

Awesome. I'm also a complete noob when it comes to things like this.

Thanks to Ken for organizing and Roger for teaching.

Sweet. One last question for now...

Are there certain types of images (or images processed a certain way, example b/w) that are a better fit for this type of printing process?

Okay - I've confirmed Feb. 20th with Roger. We'll get started at 11AM.

I need each participant to do the following by no later than Feb. 6th at 8pm:

1. open a dropbox.com acccount (it's free) and upload one unprocessed TIFF file to a folder titled "For Roger/ Pt/Pl print", then share the folder with Roger (rogeinATsympaticoDOTca) (it will be obvious on how to 'share' it when your account is set up),

Files should be unprocessed and contain as much data as possible - if you shot your image digitally send both the RAW file as well as a TIFF file. Roger will work with the RAW file if he can covert it, if not he'll work from TIFF. DO NOT MANIPULATE YOUR FILE - just get the exposure correct so that as much data is preserved as possible. Roger will do his best to create a digital negative that has the widest tonal range possible while aiming to obtain a solid black dmax while preserving highlight detail. Remember - pt/pl prints are not high contrast prints but rather offer an extremely wide and smooth tonal range not possible in a tradition silver gelatin print. If you want a silver gelatin print - then make a silver gelatin print not a platinotype (get's off soapbox); and

2. send a $25 deposit to Roger via paypal at rogeinATsympaticoDOTca - send this as a 'gift' so that no paypal fees will be incurred - or alternatively, contact him via email to arrange to deliver the deposit to him directly,

Roger will confirm receipt of each by email at which point details about the location of the workshop will be sent to you.

PM me if you have any questions.

Saw this on another forum and thought those that have or will be taking Roger's workshop might be interested in this symposium happeining in Toronto this coming May.

In the interest of full disclosure, I am involved with that symposium and assisting Bob Carnie of Elevator to coordinate some of the workshops. These workshops will be lead by industry leaders and it'll be well worth the fees.

I won't otherwise promote those workshops on TPMG as this is a non-commercial site.

Roger's workshop fees are really material fees and I receive no compensation for organizing them for TPMGers.

Looking forward to meeting Sandy King and Ron Reeder. Amazing skills and eager to share ideas their at Hybridphoto.

If I'm not mistaken the last workshop was the one at Ottawa Valley with Sandy?

Ken: Since I don't shoot digital these days, what should I do to get him an image? Should I scan an image, or should I just pick a 4x5 neg for contact printing?

Madelica had a negative in our very first workshop but used a digital negative for the contact printing. I don't know what the arrangement was but you can email Roger about that.
