Details:

What: Allan Gardens Christmas Display
When: Sun. Dec 12, 2010
Time: 4:45
Where: Main entrance to Gardens
Bring: Tripod, flash, bag large enough to stash your jacket. Micro lens or extension tubes for closeups.

Allan Gardens' Christmas display starts Dec 5 and runs through January 9th. I was hoping to get some Christmas cards out of this, so I'm going early.

You don't have to have a tripod, but it helps.

Turns out they are having a big opening event, at which photography is NOT allowed, so I changed the date to the following weekend.

They have extended hours until 7 on the weekends. They will be lighting candles, which might be nice to shoot. Or we could shoot when they open at 10:00.

Please let me know which you prefer.

Hi Pam,

we usually do this one every year as an official event --- I hadn't picked a date yet. Anyhow -- not sure I can do the 12th, although I am technically free.

I've never heard of this. Would someone be able to explain what this is about? Is it a christmas display in the outdoor areas? Indoors as well?

Allan Gardens is a series of indoor greenhouses. Each greenhouse is home to a different variety of horticultural display's and temperature environments. There are 6 in total, of which one greenhouse serves as an educational area for school tours. The greenhouse buildings are surrounded by park land between Sherbourne and Jarvis and Gerard and Carleton. The land was donated to the city in the early 1900's if I believe that to be correct.

The Christmas display puts a festive twist to the normal displays that adorn Allan Gardens the rest of the year. The display features ornaments placed between rows of different types of plant life.

Ah ok! Thanks for the explanation. So it will be mostly indoor/macro shooting.

The candles will be lit at 5, and we'll have about 2 hours to shoot. I don't know how crowded it will be, but as long we get out of the way when the public asks, I think it will be ok.

Went to check it out tonight. The display is a little more low key than I remember from past years. Nice atmosphere. Not a lot of people. The exterior looks great all lit up.

Is it too late to confirm for this event? I noticed it was requested that people confirm by thursday. Is it located near Jarvis and Carlton? Also, is anyone going from downtown??

It's not too late, I am going to be coming from Queen/Yonge up to College and walk to the gardens. If you need help I can probably let you tag along anywhere on the route

No it's not too late to confirm. I just wanted an idea of how many people, due to the murky nature of what constitutes needing a permit. I called ahead and once I mentioned that we don't charge dues, give lessons or have giant numbers (hence the 25 spots limit), he backed off the permit thing.

So in sum, if you are planning to come please move your name to the yes column by clicking.

Thanks! See everyone tomorrow night!
