Details:

What: Pt/Pl print workshop with Roger Hein (www.rogerhein.com)
When: Sunday, December 5, 2010 (To be confirmed)
Time: 11AM - 5PM
Where: Near Don Mills Subway Station
Bring: Provide digital file (upload to dropbox.com by Nov. 25). This file will be used to create a digital negative for contact printing.

Cost: $100 (material costs) - a non-refundable deposit will be required to secure your spot (can't afford to have people bail out last minute) (deposit payment details to follow).

In this workshop you will learn how to coat paper with a pt/pl light sensitized solution, mix developer and clearing agents, assemble a contact print for exposure and exposure, develop and clear your own 5x7' print on a sheet of high quality 100% cotton rag paper.

You will leave the workshop with a pigment based inkjet digital negative and a pt/pl print of your image.

Only space for 5 participants and first responders to the 'feeler' thread have priority for the first 24 hours (after which I will open it up to the rest of the TPMG membership).

If this workshop fills up and you are interested in a future workshop, please register your interest in the other registration option.

Scans of a couple of my pt/pl prints.

From David Chow's website: http://platinumprinting.co.uk/

Platinum prints, also called platinotypes, are photographic prints made by a monochrome printing process that provides the greatest tonal range of any printing method using chemical development.

Unlike the silver print process, platinum lies on the paper surface, while silver lies in a gelatin or albumen emulsion that coats the paper. As a result, since no gelatin emulsion is used, the final platinum image is absolutely matte with a deposit of platinum (and/or palladium, its sister element which is also used in most platinum photographs) absorbed slightly into the paper.

Platinum prints are loved by photographers and treasured by collectors and investors because of their tonal range, the surface quality and their permanence. The unique beauty of a fine platinum print involves a broad scale of tones from black to white. The delicate, rich platinum tones range from warm black, to reddish brown, to expanded mid-tone grays that are unobtainable in silver prints. In the deepest shadows the platinum print still presents information; the platinum whites are delicate and the depth of the image is alive and three-dimensional. Platinum prints are not only exceptionally beautiful, they are the most durable of all photographic processes. The platinum metals (platinum and palladium) are more stable than gold, and it is estimated that a platinum image, properly made, can last thousands of years.

Some of the most desirable characteristics of a platinum print include:

Sundays are not good for me :( I'll pass up my spot, unless the session is resched to another day.

Mervin - sorry about that - the date will be confirmed today. However I can try to schedule future workshops (provided there is sufficient interest) for a Saturday.

Please add your name to the list for future workshops as I will use that as a priority list in the future.

Okay - I've confirmed Dec. 5th with Roger. We'll get started at 11AM.

I need each participant to do the following by no later than next Thursday at 8PM:

1. open a dropbox.com acccount (it's free) and upload one unprocessed TIFF file to a folder titled "For Roger/ Pt/Pl print", then share the folder with Roger (rogeinATsympaticoDOTca) (it will be obvious on how to 'share' it when your account is set up),

Files should be unprocessed and contain as much data as possible - if you shot your image digitally send both the RAW file as well as a TIFF file. Roger will work with the RAW file if he can covert it, if not he'll work from TIFF. DO NOT MANIPULATE YOUR FILE - just get the exposure correct so that as much data is preserved as possible. Roger will do his best to create a digital negative that has the widest tonal range possible while aiming to obtain a solid black dmax while preserving highlight detail. Remember - pt/pl prints are not high contrast prints but rather offer an extremely wide and smooth tonal range not possible in a tradition silver gelatin print. If you want a silver gelatin print - then make a silver gelatin print not a platinotype (get's off soapbox); and

2. send a $25 deposit to Roger via paypal at rogeinATsympaticoDOTca - send this as a 'gift' so that no paypal fees will be incurred.

Roger will confirm receipt of each by email at which point details about the location of the workshop will be sent to you.

PM me if you have any questions.

Ken

Just a reminder to the participants to send their file and $25 deposit to Roger - deadline is this Thursday at 8PM.

If you haven't done so by then and haven't not contacted to make alternate arrangements, I will invite others to take your place.

PM me if you have any questions.

Ken

Just got back from the gardens. What a great workshop today and just in time as I am exploring ways of doing a twist to my own prints.

Totally enjoyed the discussions from beginning to end and the hands on as well.

Thanks for organizing Ken and to Roger for leading it. Looking forward to more of these in the months to come!!!

Randy

Great workshop and lots of fun. I still haven't had a chance to scan my print yet or look at the CD, will try to do it tonight.

Thanks so much, Ken and Roger.

The discussion about an artist's work getting recognized after their passing was an eye opener and I never thought of it as a time period of their work going through several buyers.

I remember reading a thread where Sandy King suggested a facial tanning lamp for the UV light for small negs. Can't find the link.

I looked at the blueprint that Roger sent, there is no way that I will be able to make that on my own... wish my high school had a shop class.

The more I look at the prints the more I like the texture. I love how the very way in which you apply the chemicals affect the picture too, so if you want to be fancy I think you can spread the chemicals in a certain way to match the mood of your pics too.

I'll get fancy after I get the chemicals down. But I'm expecting to print lots of crap before I can get to one that I really intend it to turn out. Not a hit or miss.

After the holidays, I'll start to collect the materials to be able to do my own. The big size that I'm partial to will have to wait for a while.
