That's super!! Congrats! But I have one question - what's this National Geographic - a small local publication? .. haha .. j/k .. that's very impressive indeed and well deserved.

Very cool! National Geo... nice going! Now when people ask you if you shoot professionally you can say "Oh I freelanced for Nat Geo one time..." lol

Thanks everyone. You guys are great.

What a cultural difference. I posted this online on another forum I frequent - a forum with predominately American members - and the reaction was somewhat different. Here everyone is congratulatory. On the other board most were as well but there were still a considerable number of people interested only in whether I gave NG the image away for free (in exchange for the credit line). A large debate erupted about whether it was ethical to give images away for free and what type of self-respecting person would do this. Others were quite bold as to ask precisely how much I was paid. A few even snorted that the picture could easily have been taken with a P&S. Others prefered to discuss the relevance of NG finding photos for their magazine from sites such as Flickr.

HA! Sounds like the feedback you'd get from the dpreview.com folks!

I can understand people wanting to know if you got paid or not and if you were, that it wasn't bargain basement. Photographers are still sore over Time's use of a jar full of coins that cost them basically spit. People being completely satisfied and happy with a credit is part of the problem editorial photographers face and it only drags things down when this happens. If this continues, and it looks like the train is skipping all stations, then it doesn't bode well for the industry.

Back on topic, congratulations and make sure you go out and buy lots of copies, I know I would :)

I think the big difference with this forum is that we mostly are all local to each other, so there is a good chance that we'll meet or at least bump into each other - the potential is just there. That means we cannot truly be anonymous, and thus this does create a sort of limitation due to some accountability. Couple that with the fact that I have not seen any really competitiveness on this site ... it is understandable.

More global sites can be a more extreme, thus producing more extreme feedback.

Well, those photographers do make valid points. As much it is cool to have your images there, it's nice to get paid since that's the business they are in(money) and not because they love magazines...
In order to cut costs(NG cut a lot of costs in the last few years, including VERY VERY talented staff photographers) they have people serching Flickr and other sites for images they need in publications. It's cheaper for them to give a credit(free...) than pay someone to actually go to the location and take the needed photos. Most people are so flattered,NG gets a lot of images for free. If you do get contacted again and are ok with giving away your photos, at least try to negotiate how the credits are shown. You can also negotiate your payment as they have standard rates they pay for pictures.
Other than that, congrats. I know how it feels to be published there...
