One of my other passions, books. Some books have a really nice presence, really they do, something that can't be felt with an ikindlepad.

Instead of reading War and Peace I took some pics of it.

I got this idea from someone on POTN, I forget who, but I'm sure it's been done a thousand million times before so I don't feel too bad about not providing proper credit:

Image

I have a feeling I am going to be lonely here.

Hehe, you weren't kidding... but yeah, that's the Constance Garnett translation! Nothing more than a doorstop. ;) Even though it was immensely influential. I'm reading it now, a different translation(Pevear and Volokhonsky), but, other than being a bit of a soap opera it's quite good. It's Leo frickin' Tolstoy after all.

Before considering translation, the first thing with War and Peace to consider is that there are dozens and dozens of characters, but, there is no need to remember them all. The important ones are around often enough that you'll make note of them. Then remember what the book is about; the life of Russian aristocracy during the Napoleonic wars. It's a novel very much about class structure in a Russia that was changing dramatically and heading toward a tremendously charged future. If the historical context doesn't pique your interest, as much as I like Tolstoy, I don't think the rest of the book will.

As for which translation is good that's up for some pretty heated debate. I've read a lot of Dostoevsky in both Garnett and Pevear and Volokhonsky(P&V) translation and I find the P&V translations to be smoother, more poetic and prettier. Garnett, although she did an amazing job considering all the works she translated, would often leave out parts she couldn't translate literally. She also turned 19th century Russian into late 19th Century English - a kind of hybrid Victorian/Modernist mix that is very dry. Not a problem if you're into late Victorian literature, think Henry James. P&V, allegedly, translate the works more authentically to the style of 19th Century Russian. I don't know Russian at all, of any period, so I can't personally confirm whether this is true or not. I can confirm academics are bickering over whether or not it is true. There are also translations of Tolstoy that contemporize the language to our time, the Anthony Briggs translation for example. The short answer to your question is P&V are allegedly the most authentic English versions for which they get a lot of credit and awards, Briggs is a contemporary version (Napoleon swears in Brigg's translation), Garnett provided the early, foundational translation, Maud Newton updated that one slightly. As a non-Russian speaker I like the P&Vs the best.

I've read it in Russian, and almost blew my brains out. It's a terrible masterpiece, wouldn't recommend it :D Extremely boring read

P.S I don't only read action filled literature, on the contrary

as a professional Russian-English translator I wouldn't recommend it in a non-Russian variant either  no translation can ever transfer what the original contains

There's no denying that translation is inexact and it's always best to read something in its original language, but to suggest not reading something because it is a translation is silly. There has been and always will be tremendous value for the millions that have read Shakespeare, Joyce, Mann, M
