I have not done any racing shots. So Friday is a freebie day and I think I will manage to be in.
What will be interesting to shoot? And what to avoid?
Also I heard that they may restrict people bringing in long lens. What restriction? I know quite a few tpmg people are keen driver too. There must be some info'

Supposedly lenses no longer than 10 inches are allowed. How strict they will be is questionable. With so many patrons, I doubt they'd be measuring anyone's lens but don't hold me to that! lol

Hopefully the pit girls are around. Have fun.

Maybe a bit late but sometimes you can get a pitcrew pass from some of the smaller teams in the lesser series for a minor amount of work you get to watch and take photos from pit lane.

Great if you got a media pass :D Skipping this year, conflict with something else so won't be there this year.

As for security checking, I heard a few years ago that they didn't even bother checking people coming in. Heck they didn't even bother checking people for valid tickets! Guessing with low attendance, it was better to have the grand stand SOMEWHAT occupied with people vs no people at all. Bring the lens anyways, if you get in great, if not, just store it back in the trunk of your car or something.

I wonder how ticket sales are doing? Or if the year off last yr or was it 2yrs will help drive sales up or tank sales due to low interest?

Before the split, I knew almost every drivers name. Some famous with deep racing history. Now it's hard to get excited for any of those drivers racing this weekend.

Any ways if you're going Friday, try to get a pit pass. Or head down to corner 3 I think, were the cars come off the Lakesh ore, you should see some passing or crashing there.

Have Fun.

If you do get a pit pass, make sure you are wearing shoes, as they will not give you access if you're in flip flops or sandles.

I'm going to try and make it down there. Where do you guys usually park? I almost don't want to park on site because I'm sure the prices are going to be ridiculous

I'm thinking about going too. Is there a vague idea of meeting up?

If you want to get a variety of cars and such and no limitation on audio/video/photography equipment, check out the ALMS at Mosport on August 26 through the 29th.

It was a free for all back when Molson ran it and you could even buy a weekend photo pass for the event. Honda has put a stop to the weekend photo pass unless you qualify for a media pass. I guess the legal and PR issues if the photographer gets injured during a race wasn't worth the hassle for Honda despite having the photographers sign a release form. Well I guess another concern could be to avoid potential terrorist attacks since a photo pass would allow someone access to a lot more places that may not have security? I'm just guessing here...

There were complaints about the photo pass, including a complaint from myself a few years ago. People with these photo pass were at photo locations where they should not have been, and there was confusion with security on where they were allowed, people not moving for media people to get their shot and move on, etc. I think it was more of a headache than anything else.

Just came from the Indy, free Friday.

I didn't bring any serious gear with me but I've seen lots of guys with 100-400L or similar lenses. Yes, the Canon 100-400L is less than 10" fully retracted and without the hood.

I asked a couple of guys if they had press passes and if they had any trouble bringing the lenses in and answer was no, in both cases.

Just got back from the Indy. I was using a bunch of different lenses including an older 70-210 f4. Saw lots of people with 70-200 f2.8, f4 lenses. I wasn't hassled at all and didn't see anyone else getting bothered either.

Also recorded parts of the Nascar practice and qualifying with my PS.

For a free day, it didn't seem to be very crowed at all. Security was not very tight as fans was able to get to the photo window entering Lakeshore. Don't know how they got through.

I'll try to post more later. Enjoy.

Nice shots. I didn't have a media pass so I didn't really try to get past security. Those fences are a pain in the ass to shoot thru!

I decided to go to the Indy today and let me say that unless you have media credentials, there is no way you're going to get a clean picture of a car on the track - there are fences EVERYWHERE! I think they moved all the fences from the G20 to the Indy :(

The only clean shot I could get of the cars moving was from the stands overlooking the pit lanes.

The paddocks and exhibition hall was more interesting - since you can get much closer to the cars.

Fences are there for a reason unfortunately. Media people who have access to those photo holes also sign off saying that if they get injured/killed then we don't hold the organizers liable.

Cars in motion > cars stationary.

I tried to get some panning shots yesterday and just couldn't do it with any success through the photo windows in the fence. So I just shot through the fence instead. Not as clean, but it gives a interesting point of view.

Panning is something that requires practice. It's like a golf swing. Faster you swing the less accuracy in where that golf ball is going. Slower the swing the more accurate it will be.

And panning is no different. Because you're shooting at the photo hole, you're much closer to the cars and thus the panning is much faster. Shoot back further but now you have the fence in the way, your panning is slower thus the higher number of keepers.

That's why you see some guys shooting way back further than being right at the corner at Mosport... assuming you have the good long lens to compose the shot properly vs doing excessive cropping in the post processing.

The cars were going way to fast to get a good panning shot through the photo holes, at least for me without snapping my back. The longest lens I have is a 200mm which wasn't long enough to shoot from the roof of the D.E.C. It would of been nice to get some panning shot from above.

I did get some clean ones when the cars were entering pit lane. I just have to find them now.
