I'm headed to the Galapagos Islands in 2 weeks! I'm super excited to be going so soon, but I was hoping to have more photography experience under my belt before I actually took this opportunity.

I'm thinking of getting a reasonable lens for my Nikon and can't decide whether I should go for a wide angle or telephoto. I already have 18-70mm zoom & normal prime. Any tips, advice, comments would be appreciated.

Also, anyone else ever been?

Thanks everyone!
Chelsea

if you already have 18-70 get a 70-300 cover all your focal lengths .. unless you want an all in one lens 18-200 but doesnt make sense with your 18-70

I'm jealous. Yeah, what Tyler said. I would go with a telephoto since you have the 18-70 and a normal prime. Oh, and have a great time.

I've been to there 2.5 years ago. I'm sure you'll have lots of fun :D

70-300 is a good choice. All the outdoor activities take place under the bright sunshine so it's perfectly fine to use slower lenses, and being small and light will pay off fast as you'll be hiking through some of the most bizarre (yet stunning) terrain. VR will be a plus as you will have chances to take pictures on a rolling dinghy (e.g. a group of swimming penguins).

Also make sure you have filters on your lenses and bring excessive cleaning materials - as seawater will be your greatest (and sand being the distant second) enemy for your gear.

I'm green with envy!

From what I've read, it is much better to get a tour organized specifically for photographers. The regular tourists tours might be a little rushed and not very accommodating for photogs.

Counter to what everyone else in this thread are saying, a rule of thumb I've heard is that the further from home you're going, the wider a lens you want.

I know I'm probably in the minority on this one.

I was there in February. Best vacation I've ever been on.

What tour group are you going with? Do you know which islands you're seeing?

The group I was with wasn't a photo heavy group, and I never felt rushed at any point.

If you have any questions, let me know.

Great shots! Galapagos is right up there with Africa on my TDL.

My advice: Snorkel as much as you can. It is amazing there. I'd never done it before. I'm not a super strong swimmer, so did it with a PFD on. Played with sea lions pups.

CaveatEmptor .

PotatoEYE isn't weather sealed!! But I think he could function well as a self propelled mono-pod.

Alas, I too would offer my services as a lens if it weren't for the fact I am old and front focus far too often.
