I have been thinking of getting an UWL for my 50D for some time now. I have narrowed it down to either the Sigma 10-20 or the Tokina 11-16. There is about a $100 spread between the two camera's if I buy the Tokina out of province.

I know that the Tokina has a very strong following and is a wonderful lens. Is it worth the extra money..

Also, buying from Alberta... is there any known problems, or should I just order one from Aden and take the extra $60 hit from PST?

Thanks for any opinions.

Matt.

When I was researching the Tokina I don't recall seeing any quality issues in all the threads and reviews - in fact it was usually praised for its build quality. It certainly does have a solid feel to it. I've been very happy with mine.

The Tokina seems to be the champ right now, but why don't you wait a little as the new Sigma 8-16mm should be hitting the streets soon and it will be interesting to see reviews. Although slower with a f4.5-5.6 aperture, it will provide quite a dramatic angle of view.

That's what I'm waiting for before making my decision.

Invest in Canon, the quality and resale value won't disappoint you

I was not considering Canon as the price is a bit too high for me. Also, I don't buy a lens expecting that I am going to sell it off. Resale value is the last thing on my mind. And seeing how the Tokina lenses seem to be snatched up just as fast as they come up for sale, I don't see how their resale value can be that bad.

As far as the new Sigma.. I didn't know. I will have to wait and see I guess. I don't know if I need to go down to the 8mm level. It might be cool. It's another one of those, is a bird in your hand better than two in the bush.

I know that the Tokina is a great lens. The new Sigma might, but only time will tell if it's as sharp and good long term.. Also, who knows what the price and availability is going to be like.

This is like waiting for Christmas

Actually when I was researching UWA there was a small amount of chatter about Canon having a cheap feel compared to the Sigma or Tokina. On POTN I think. The Canon allegedly controls flare better though. And if the demand for the Tokina keeps up resale value won't be a problem with it either. Good luck finding one though.

I've been keeping an eye out for the Tokina as well. Hard to come by so you wont have any issue with reselling it, if ever.

Actually, the Tokina 11-16 have had assembly issues until a few months ago. That is a big reason why they are still hard to find.

I ended up buying a Sigma 12-24 (full frame :P) but may circle back to the Tokina just for the f/2.8.... If only I had a spare $700 lying around.

I did read about the assembly issues that caused the shortage but didn't see a whole lot about that trickling into quality issues with lenses purchased. Perhaps I only encountered reviews of lenses from later assembly periods? Dunno.

I think the only circumstance in which I would consider selling mine is if I were to get a full frame camera and wanted to fund the full frame version Tokina is shortly bringing out. And that's if I wasn't going to keep it for my 7D which will likely never get sold.

Judging by your comments then, I'd say go for Tokina

So I went against all logic and fiscal responsibility, and ordered a Tokina from Broadway Camera last night. It should be delivered in about a week. I didn't see the point in paying the extra $30 to get it two days sooner.

I sure hope that there are no issues with this camera store or horror stories that I didn't know about. They had just got several of them in stock so I jumped.

Will have to see if this was a good move, or a learning experience as they say.
