hi there... is this the raynox u r referring to?
http://www.henrys.com/webapp/wcs/stores ... emID=84807

do u need some sort of an adapter ring to fit this onto the camera?

thanks!

I picked one up on ebay back in June for $50US not $130CDN from Henry's. It locks onto the threaded part where filters go on.

Pinkster really nice macro shots.

This is about as close as I can get to a macroshot with the Canon 24-105L

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/metrix_feet/3913662883/" title="Long Live American Iron - 1950s Hearse by Metrix X, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2423/3913662883_b8bdacf2d2_o.jpg" width="1200" height="800" alt="Long Live American Iron - 1950s Hearse"></a>

Does I shot through a microscope count as a macro?

I use a 28-100 Minolta with a 50mm minolta attached to it in reverse to get close ups such as this (it's a little burnt, but I do have some better examples I need to upload):

Serious question for everyone. Don't laugh.

How do you prevent the insects from fleeing when you take the photo?
How close does the lens get to the insect when you do macro photography?

1. Kill them first or use longer lenses, crop
2. as close as it can before they do number 1

It is a serious question and worthy of a serious answer and not a laugh.

Regarding your first question, a couple of things you can try;
    * A longer lens. A 200 mm macro will provide more distance than a 100 mm macro and may not disturb the insect .
    * Concentrate on insects that rely on camouflage for protection. They will freeze when they feel threatened and count on their colouring or markings to protect them.
    * Shoot early on cool mornings. Insects are cold blooded and are less active when it is cool and so less likely to fly away.
    * Similarly mornings with heavy dew can be good as some insects will have dew on them and will be unable to flee, such as dragonflies.
    * Sometimes when insects are active in an area you can set up on a location and wait for them to come to you.
    * Captive set ups can also be considered if you can do it without harming your subject.

As for your second question your manual will tell you how close your lens gets at its closest focusing distance. If you don't have a lens yet, check the specs of the lenses you are interested in. The longer the focal length the further away you can be to get 1:1 images.

DG

Thanks DG and potatoeye!! I have a Canon G10 and don't intend on using it to photograph bug eyes. I was just curious.

But now I am even more intrigued potatoeye. How do you kill them without squashing them?

I am clueless, I have never done so, nor will I ever do. I just try to be more careful not to scare them off, yet bug photography might have you invest into extention tubes/magnifying lenses on top of your macro
