What software do you use with your Epson scanner? I have the V700 and I'm using Epson Scan. Does a good job scanning 120 negs but not 35mm. VueScan (I just downloaded it- trial) does scan 35mm better. I haven't tried Silver Fast yet. So what are you using?

yeah i have v500 and i just use the default as well, i heard good things about vue scan but i didn't want to pay extra and i'm a easy guy to please, pretty satisfied with the default software's auto-exposure or dust removal functionality.

I actually like Epson Scan, it's just that I can't get accurate colours and density when scanning 35mm negs. I ordered holders and ANR glass from betterscanning.com but I'm still waiting for them. I'm wondering if the scan would be better with the proper holders. Right now I don't use holders when scanning 35mm negs, reason being the shots came from a Holga and the images extend along the sprocket holes. To scan I just put them under a clear glass with no holders. I could use the 35mm holders but that would defeat the purpose of shooting 35mm in a Holga.

ah interesting, didn't know holgas did that

yeah, i think the professional mounts are worth it for v700. i was also contemplating it but since it is basically 50% of my scanner price, i decided to skip it.

gotta admit, the default mount can be made better. i don't know why my 35mm film can still move up and down from the mount when all 35mm film are exactly the same size. is it that hard to make a precise mount!

Try the trial version of Vuescan, you can select the film type. When changing from one type to another on the same scan, things can change quite a bit. Kodak negs are well covered but Fugi coverage is sparse. If you neg type is supported you might get an improvement on colour accuracy. The trial version will output a final file for you all be it water marked, but you can still see if works for you.

Yeah, it's fun! Here's a link if you want to try it.

Are you getting precise colours, though? I know I don't because I compared my scan from that of Downtown Camera and they're not the same. I know DC is using professional scanners, but the colours/quality of the 120 negatives are negligible.

I'm not sure if your last question was directed at me but if it was.

I've only scanned fugi films and non of them where supported in the neg type selection, and have not been entirely successful. But when change selection a lot can happen. I'm looking forward to trying some film taht is supported. Give the Vuescan trial a try, doesn't cost you anything to see if it will work for you.

oh wow, that looks like a fun project with 35mm conversion. it is now definitely on my to try list :)

to be honest i'm not too sure about colour on 35mms. i've scanned 1 roll of ektar and 1 roll of expired slide film when it comes to color. other than that it was all black and white.

the results seemed to be in line with the people's opinion of film's characteristics, like ektar having a magenta cast on red or what not. then again, since i never had professional grade done, i don't really have a frame of reference.

I was asking madelica, only because I didn't see your post before I hit submit, but I'm glad you replied.

I have the trial version of Vuescan and it gives better results than Epson Scan on 35mm colour negatives. It was a Fuji Superia that I scanned, using both Vuescan and Epson Scan.

I'll try Silver Fast one day. Is scanning 35mm more finicky than 120s?

Sorry I don't have the experience to answer that. I should think that colour and density should not make any difference between the two, neg emultion is emultion big or small and you are already attemping to flatten out your negs with glass plate mounting in the scanner.

hmm.. I am interested to know as well, as I also have the V700, and I love it for 4x5 and 120mm scanning, but I agree.... 35mm just doesn't come out great. There has to be something better.

You should be scanning the negative at 2400 or 3200 dpi

that will make a big difference with a flatbed. I've been scanning my 35mm at 600dpi, and I too have had issues with colour.

I have done many experiments on my V500, scanning at 3200 with scanning sharping set to low (not off) and downsizing gives better results then scanning at lower resolutions. I can not see any difference scanning at higher resolutions. I usually scan medium format at 1200 or 2400 as 3200 gives files which are too large, 2400 is much better then 1200 dpi.

I just tried 2400 but it took too long, cancelled it and changed to 1200. Made a lot of difference. File size is huge... 54MB for one frame in jpg format.

Not sure why you get such large files as 35mm film is 24x35mm around 6 Mpixel at 2400 DPI and about 20 MP for 6x6

I goofed. I had the target size set at 8.5 x 14 inches. The 4x6 scan was 12MB @ 1200 dpi with pixel dimension of 7198 x 4799. This is the entire width of the 35mm negative, including the sprocket holes.

Since some time has passed, I'm curious what you all have discovered. I use a V700 with Epson Scan software.

I'm scanning 35mm negs and my colors are all off. Some negs are 7-10 years old. Some are from this year. All are pro film. It's a real pain trying to adjust the color for every single picture. Is there software that will nail it right away or get really close?
