I was made aware by a friend that a website was using a photo I took.

http://www.instantshift.com/2014/10/31/ ... on-photos/

The page is entitled "70 Most Powerful Photos About Human Experience Ever Taken". There are some great photos on there but I guess the quality falls off before we get to my photo at #54. I took the photo at the Toronto Remembrance Day event at Old City Hall. Decent photo of the event but only a crazed person would deem it to be one of the "most powerful photos about human experience EVER" taken. The caption is laughable. "A sad old man". This leads me to think they didn't lift it from my flickr site where it is entitled "Distraught at Toronto Remembrance Day ceremony".

So do the website owners just grab and display photos for advertising revenue?

Looks like you are right...they build spiders which will grab images from the web.

Don't know how they pick the photos, but they did credit you and if you click on the credit it goes to your 500PX site.
I think sometimes these things maybe from people submitting links of photos they think are appropriate too.
