I have the opportunity to spend a few days, only 4 or 5, in NL soon. Question is, should I fly to St John's and drive the east, boat trips to the Witless reserve etc, or should I go to Deer Lake and spend the time in the Gros Morne park? I have never been out there and just looking at websites can become a little overwhelming, so all suggestions are welcome from those in the know.

My photographic preferences are for landscapes (preferably with rocks, hills etc), birds & wildlife, if that helps.

Thanks!

Id go with Gros Morne. Just completely break taking landscapes out that way. the Interior of NFL is gorgeous, not to say that the coast isn't though either, and I think its worth the trip to see it. if you went up to the north as well id suggest any of the number of viking settlement ruins that scatter the landscape. lovely scenes.

I'd suggest St. John's and do trips from there. Bonavista is a long day trip but the town is worth the drive. You have to experience St. John's as well, which is wonderful. I would save the west coast for a longer trip so you can head up to L'Anse Aux Meadows.

Oh boy, 1 vote for West, 1 for East. Given that the OH has decided she would like to come with me and is not a great hiker, I think it's going to be east this time, and I'll save Gros Morne for when I go back on my own. Thanks for the responses!

Some friends of mine spent two weeks on the Island last summer and have posted a slide show on YouTube just this past week. They mainly stayed on the west side. Check it out, it may influence your thoughts.

I did almost 4 weeks in NL - drove all over the place!!! Both sides have amazing landscapes. For the short time you have I'd agree and do the easy coast this time. From St. John's you can head to bay bulls and do a whaling tour. They usually take you to the bird sanctuary as well, but unless you have a really long lens it's so-so. My 70-200 on cropped sensor was definitely not enough. With that said their is a spot north of St. John's near the root cellars that you can actually get within like 5-7 feet of the puffins!! Also on the east you have cape spears and the narrows, bell island and other areas close to St. John's.

If you have any questions let me know.

Cheers,

Jordan
