Looking at some of the equipment people have here, I'm wondering if anyone would admit to having Gear Acquisition Syndrome:

Thank God, I am now a gear minimalist focused on photography and a big fan of Limitation creativity

I stopped reading after that, the first sentence. It's completely fallacious to state that because of X I can not do Y.

Because I like gear means I can not also be concerned with creativity = because I like apples I can not possibly like oranges.

Just a soapbox statement saying "lookitme! I'm going the creative route and better than you who talks too much about gear according to me." It's very superficial thinking. Our relationship with tools, particularly creative tools is more complex than this.

Still trying to figure out what is limitation creativity. I read that as I've purposely limited myself to the equipment I own therefore I need to take a shot outside of what I had planned because I don't have the necessary gear to take the shot I originally wanted. That's not creativity, but it certainly is a limitation.

"limitation creativity" is purposely limiting yourself to hopefully inspire you to create things you otherwise wouldn't.

i.e. Today I'm only going to shoot with a 50mm lens or I'm only going to shoot for the colour blue.

For me, I definitely need limitations to be creative.

hmmm... i always thought being human was a serious limitation in itself... but in that case, you could buy all the gear in the world and still be limited... by your human suckiness, so to speak?

I am only limited in the gear I have because of money. Otherwise I'd have different tools for different jobs and/or to capture the image I have in my head (in the real world).

There is a difference between the gear-heads who just buy x, y, and z because the like having the newest and greatest gear, but don't really take photos; and those who buy the newest and greatest so they can go out and capture the images they seek (usually faster or easier with the upgraded gear)

Hahaha, I've been coming around to the idea of less is more thou. Now i find myself setting out with just one camera and a prime lens on a tripod. This way I find I stop thinking about the gear and focus on the shot.

That could be just an ebay addition. Check yourself in and get an expert assessment.

After reading this blog post by Zack Arias, I'm half tempted to ditch my D700 along with the arsenal of lenses I have and pare down.

The idea is tempting so I don't need to sherpa my equipment around anymore.

The camera industry, except Fuji, must be hating Zack right now...

While I agree with Zack and am quite the Fuji convert. Keep in mind he also shoots with a MF camera when he needs the resolution, etc. so he is still not fully just the Fuji, maybe 80-90% Fuji :)

Fair enough. He mentions the Phase One a couple of times, but it's easy to miss that point given the length of the text and the number of times he mentions his medium format camera.

I love my Olympus for travelling, and am thinking of picking up a wide angle, the only reason I still bring my D700 along for trips, but the idea of spending more money to have essentially two complete system seems like a complete waste on the cash front.

I think I have less of a gear acquisition syndrome and more of a anti-saving money syndrome...it burns a hole in my pockets

Well if you have the $$$ buy what you want, but I think this little article hits a cord when cameras are looked at as fashion accessories and status symbols.

There's been some very ugly cameras made, like the Konica Minolta Z10, and the Olympus IS film cameras.

What's wrong with with a good looking camera, as long as it does the job.

I've always bought straps and cases that I liked, rather than using the ALWAYS ugly OEM strap (advertising the camera brand).

Even back in the 1800's cameras looked nice...the wood is nicely sanded and varnished, not rotten wood!

We pick a nice house and beautify it by doing the yard, we get a nice car and enhance it with accessories...why can't I enhance my camera?

Because it's about the images man!! The images!!! ARRRRTTTT!

That said, I agree completely. I picked up a 500C/M not only because I've always wanted one and the character of the images it creates, but also because it's the prettiest MF camera by a lot. That thing has a whole lot o' presence. And good for Hassy for at least picking the brand that's making the ugliest cameras right now, not that I'm personally a fan of the "improvements." Someone needs to pretty Fuji's X-Pro 1 up a bit now... Which is weird because Fuji does appear to know how to make a good looking camera...

my Speed Graphic is probably my "nicest" looking camera..... And I love using it for street shooting - I get a lot of people stopping to talk to me about it - asking what kind of film it takes, etc.

Has anyone asked you if it's a Hasselblad?
