The Muskoka Wildlife Centre on Hwy 11 where a number of TPMG outings to photograph up close and intimate with the animals took place has closed its doors.

Apparently the government is forcing the business along 11 to close as they plan to turn 11 into a 400 series type highway with no access. It will also mean the end of other landmarks like Webbers and Epps. And the cheap gas along 11 at Gravenhurst.

That's terrible!!! This is definitely one example where "progress" can suck it!

I know, eh!
Both the wildlife centre AND Webbers!?!?!
They are the only two reasons I've ever gone up that way.

Wow, that was unexpected - no chance for a last outing there. According to this article, there are unconfirmed plans to relocate.

Checked out the Hwy 11 plan a little more. The plan is to turn Hwy 11 into a six lane highway similar to a 400 series highway. The first section that will be converted is the stretch from Washago to Gravenhurst. It will likely take a couple of decades to finish the work. So for now Webber's will be safe as it is south of the starting point.

It's a shame there aren't plans to reopen elsewhere. I've never personally been there but those types of centres are very useful.

Wow, now I know why they would not book a group trip to the place or come out and do anything at work (Child Care). They just said they were not taking booking at the moment. This was before the beginning of May.

I remember back when you could make a left turn to get to the other side...now you have to travel further north, go under the highway, and come back south...but I guess it's a safety thing.

Last night I received an email form Dale at the Centre saying that although they are closed to the public they are still running photo sessions for awhile. AND they hope to have a new site with enclosures optimized for photography open in the winter. So some good news. They have had a wolf pup born at the end of April and have acquired a rare Gray Fox, both of which are the subjects of the sessions.

I'm not sure if they will be running sessions in the fall. I guess if they do find a new home to move to for the winter they may be busy moving in the fall. All I know right now is they have limited sessions open in June with specific animals.

The sessions this June are only 2 hours and are $500 limited to five participants. There will be 4 animals to photograph. Wolf cub, Gray Fox, Beaver and Saw Whet Owl (the Telus bird I believe).

Of Mike's dates, my best chances would be June 2 or 22, preferably in the morning.

That's four people, including DG.
Book it DG!
I'll cover the final spot if no one else joins in.
Also, I can pay the up front fee for the event if you want, and then collect from participants on the day of the event.
