I own 2 macs, and an iPad, so, I've heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem, but what I'm really interested in is who makes the better product.
Since I've never used any photo editing software beyond iPhoto, which application does a better job/has more real world functionality - Lightroom or Aperture? Which one am I most likely to "grow" with, as a photographer?
Any input would be very much appreciated!

James

Lightroom will do much of what needs to be done. Download the evaluation version watch the teaching videos and if you find you can use it then Lightroom is for you.

As for Aperture I haven't used it, won't use it not because it has lost a feature battle with Lightroom but because my workflow is built around Lightroom not Aperture.

If you want to grow you might want to consider how rather then what features are better on what software. A good primer can be found here: http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutori ... rkflow.htm and a more specific to Lightroom here: http://thomashawk.com/2011/08/my-photog ... -2011.html

I'm a believer in a 90% or more non-destructive workflow

Well, to be honest, my photography will be a mix of family photos, real estate photography, and any attempts at photographic expression that i can muster. I have a feeling that Aperture will give me less wriggle room over time, so when I drop by Henry's EXPOSURE expo this afternoon...the deciding factor might be a deal on LR.
Thanks, Metrix.

Either product will do the job, but I have found that beyond basic editing and adjustments (which really covers a large portion of my work flow) Aperture falls short. i have not really used lightroom so i cannot say what more if offers, other than what i have read. I have stayed with Aperture because I like the workflow it provides (and like Lightroom it is non-destructive). Both offer trial versions - so try both out and see, but if you are coming from iPhoto you will find Aperture very familiar, just much more powerful. But if there is no Aperture 4 by the time a Lightroom 5 comes out I think I may have to consider doing the switch.
