[I know this topic seemingly comes up on a regular basis. However, I've searched the forums, and have not found anything exactly applicable.]

I am looking to insure my camera gear that I use non-commercially. I particularly want to insure against major loss like a mugger/snatch thief/burglar taking my whole camera bag.

I already have homeowner's insurance, but I want something specific to my camera gear.

State Farm is quoting me $1.49/$100 coverage/yr. There is no deductible. (They don't offer deductibles for camera gear.)

Is that a reasonable price? I've asked to see the fine print on this policy, but they have not sent me one yet. Any "gotchas" should be aware of?

Thanks.

That's a bit expensive, I believe last time I renewed my policy it was approximately $20 more per year for up to 20K. And that included coverage if I dropped my camera etc, not just theft.

Ditto. You can also add a rider to your insurance listing specific items that are covered as well under 'contents'. I list my gear (not that I have tons) and I have the same thing for jewelry - specific items that I have cataloged/taken pictures of and appraised values for (that might be tricky for gear) Maybe try contacting another company to see if they can offer you something more specific to what you are looking for. I'm with TD Meloche Monnex and find they have decent rates.

State Farm won't budge from that $1.49/$100 coverage/yr quote. Time to go shopping.

Thanks for all the replies and info.

Home owner insurance shouldn't be used fr something inexpensive as camera equipment (under $20,000).

Home insurance should be for big stuff, like your foundation has cracked and your house is sinking, major flood/fire damage, or someone suing you because they fell on your property.

Insurance companies deny this, but there's consumer news stories about insurance companies cancelling policies after two strikes (claims), even if the claims are denied.
