Is it possible to move to some exotic vacation destination and sell only vacation photos to people?

like travel photography you mean? Or doing portraits of people "on vacation"?

The article talks about people willing to pay $500 to $1,000 an hour to get quality vacation photos taken. It doesn't really explain what type of pictures these are, I'm assuming a photographer follows you around on vacation...or takes you to spots with dynamic lighting & landscape to get high quality images.

So to review:
1. You get to live in some exotic location
2. You earn $500 to $1,000 per hour.

I've heard of worse jobs!

So, I followed NBCs article to the website of the person who took one of the pics:

I'm sure it happens but that doesn't mean it's an exemplar of that type of photography. How or why someone gets into that price bracket has as much to do with luck as anything else.

It's not THAT crazy. If you were to do an engagement shoot in a number of locations across a 3 hour time span, you'd probably charge $300-600. If you were in a niche market, and a sought after photographer, you could get away with $600-1200.

I'm not sure it's luck that gets people there. It's a combination of talent, but more importantly, business skill, marketing, networking, etc.

The more expensive photographers I've seen aren't necessarily the best. They're usually *very* good AND very social, personable, good at marketing, willing to work hard, reliable, etc, etc.

The best wedding photographer I've ever seen made an average living because he was a bit grumpy and moody and sometimes hard to work with. The highest priced wedding photographer I've ever seen wasn't nearly as good, but made buckets of money because he was intensely focused, driven, easy to work with and charismatic enough to get people to do whatever he said and love doing it.

Sure, you too can be a vacation photographer, but it's all about marketing. :-)
