We all know HDR processing is very tricky and demanding, we also know some of us tend to not do a great job at keeping the processed images looking realistic enough. Some suffer from the lack of contrast, some lack from muddiness, others - oversaturation. Here's a little alternative that is now possible. I've actually been doing it for a while now and forgot about HDR all along. Surely there are certain applications for the technique, but I much prefer to extract all possible tonal range from a single Raw image nowadays.

Anyway, you can read about it Here

Yes lightroom 4 is a lot better in this regard compared to previous versions.

Personally I've used Photomatix for this extensively in the past. Maybe I'll give light room 4 a whirl.

I originally used Photoshop for it, but as my Raw files got better (Pwith technology, not my ability) Photoshop became more of a pain in the ass to do it.
Photomatix is my "quick and dirty/easy" go-to, but even my 3D software does a better job of HDR creation, editing, and production.

What PE is showing is an alternative to HDR, not HDR + tonemapping that Photomatix does.

You might want to try in camera HDR with the EV button and the multiple exposure feature if your camera has it. Take your shots with EV-2, EV-1, EV0, EV+1, EV+2 while in multiple exposure mode. The final image should have a pretty broad range. I cant believe Ive never tried it, but intend to.

I cringe at the thought of in Camera HDR on anything but a point and shoot.

The technique that Bynx describes is not called in-camera hdr... Which would be an actual in-camera processed hdr produced by the camera itself. But rather the process of adjusting ev is one popular method.

I prefer the bracketting by 1 to 2 stop method. And my results have been great. I do not like hdr's with pronounced halo's.... So my hdr work is more natural.

His language his horrifically confused then:

Based on the fact that he suggests he's never tried it, I am willing to believe that he is speaking of in-camera HDR though.
