if there is a professional photographer, at a jack and jill party, would this be wrong for me to bring my camera and try to capture the moment?

Why do you need to be better than the paid photographer? Going to sell the photos?

A jack and jill is pretty informal, I wouldn't worry too much about it, if there is a professional, stay out of the way. You can always bring the girl in the top hat to distract him.

Why not just go an enjoy the party? The couple will already have photos given to them by the pro.

this. It's an informal party and they want their guests to have fun, not worry about photos. Take a point and shoot if you want so you wont worry about getting the best shots.

I don't want to rain on your parade or anything, but because you keep making mentions of getting into professional gigs and now possibly trying to upstage an actual pro... Don't you think you should maybe figure out the basics before attempting pro work? Work on figuring out how to take a photo that's exposed properly and is at least somewhat properly framed.

I'd leave the camera at home and just spend the evening hanging around the pro and asking a lot of questions. Maybe even see if they'll let you hold their camera and take some shots. Tell them you have a D4 coming to break the ice.

who has a pro photographer at their jack and jill? seriously... people have way too much money. They can hire me, and I'll gladly take their money.

I was thinking the same thing.

Then again, this "pro" is probably one of the unmentionables from all of the threads warning of bad photographers.

This "pro" probably had a lowball quote. You should offer to take pictures at the stag. wink wink.

Then you make the real money, by telling the groom that you'll sell the shots to the bride, unless......... The lowball just gets you in the door.

Read the above linked article.

Quote:
Don’t put emotional pressure on the bride to get permission to also be a photographer at the wedding.

“My cousin has a camera and would like to take photos. He / she won’t get in your way. Is that okay?”

Yes, it is okay, but not ideal.

While you will probably get permission from the bride or groom to also be a wedding photographer (and not even just the guest-with-a-big-camera), they are more than likely just agreeing with your request so they can avoid feeling uncomfortable if they had told you “no”. But really, it’s not ideal.

Just enjoy the J&J.
Not taking shots, and watching how another photographer does things can be very educational.

If on the other hand the hired photographer isnt that great. Then at least those organizing the party will have learnt a lesson in hiring "lowball" photographers.

I say leave the camera home or if you must take pics, a P&S would suffice for candids but stop when things start to go "adult" oriented if you catch my drift. Go have fun. Sometimes some things don't need to be photographed ie stags, stagettes and quite possibly J&J when everyone gets intoxicated and want no evidence of the night showing up on some silly social media.

This is so the opposite of my friends, LOL. I've been asked, "We have hired someone for our photos, but could you bring a camera as well just in case?" LOL. I say "no way". I don't like doing gigs for friends as I feel obligated to give a discount ... which I won't do anymore. Leave the camera at home. It's a pain to carry around a DSLR at a function when you're working it ... so why bother?

And I don't get "giving them photos as a gift" when they've hired someone to already do that. Strange.

and how would you feel, *if* you became a professional, if someone outshot you as a freebie ? dude, enjoy the party, get plastered and don't get in the photographer's way. god, I hope you don't do this at weddings ;)

btw, as others have alluded to, professionalism is more than button pushing.
