I have 5d mk1 and 430 ex 1.
I found somewhat weird thing happening when I set up my body Aperture priority mode and flash in manual mode.
When I put in these setting (body a-mode, flash m-mode), then my shutter speed won't change and stuck at 1/200. (I am trying to lower the shutter speed like 1/50 and do know about high speed sync).. Also, I double checked custom function number 3(Flash sync speed in Av mod) which is 1.(auto) 2. (fixed at 1/200).

I think when I used 580 ex2, I was able to change shutter speed in the same setting but I don't understand why this is not working with 430 ex.

It's probably a custom function, that sets the camera to shoot at max shutterspeed when a flash is installed. I know where it is on my 5d2 its called "flash sync. in Av mode" and the setting is "fixed" and you want to switch it to "auto". Again it might be called something slightly different due to diffident model.

I got an answer from the other camera site.
It is just how Canon set set up the older cameras...
It does same thing for 20d 30d 40d or 5d....
It is little weird why they set up the body like this but at least it is not just me
