it's called mixed media arts, I believe. And it's very common these days. Some people do a really good job, like the one here

When I was in college a friend, who was going to OCA at the time, would get some similar effects by scrawling on the emulsion of a fresh Polaroid shot. No, he was to skinny to be in MMA.
