Found a new website to upload photos to.. but I'll keep my Flickr too. I really like the look of 500px. It's simple like Fluidr but just for your collection of best photos.

Yep, these guys are very enthusiastic at what they are doing.
They have built everything from scratch and continue to evolve.

Not sure if you can compare them with Flickr, I see them more geared towards serious hobbyist and professionals who want to have (just another) portfolio.
As thericyip mentioned, it is more of a place for your best photos.

I like 500px since it isn't blocked at work, can't access flickr or even smug.

They had me sold on this: Handmade using ecologically sustainable code.

Plus one of the founders has same last name as my cousin

Are they free to join?

Yea, they are free to join but you need to come up with $50 if you want all the features.

Sign up and find out  Anyway, here's the full list from the website:

http://500px.com/upgrade

From what I've seen from signing up so far, you can upload up to 20 pictures a week.

They don't seem to have any sorta security features to prevent people from downloading your photos and the ones posted publicly are 900px. I know someone can always screen grab your photo, but a deterrent isn't bad :p.

That is also what I've noticed. Just post your absolute best/favorite shots. This is what makes the site so much better than Flickr for finding inspiration/ideas.

[i]First of all, 500px is about your portfolio, so if you don't want to socialize, follow people, see their awesome new works, chat with them, or discover new photos

Why not join the Toronto Photo Club. Free to all with no special pay more money to be a "PRO" features.
http://torontophotoclub.ca \

IMHO the numeric rating is even more tacky then flickr interesting. Now you to can choose what photograph to look at purely on the basis of a numerical score. Soon they can dispense with the photograph and just display the score

Toronto Photo Club's front page is pretty much an immediate turn off. Cluttered and awkward, the most notable thing on it is the ad. 500px's page is a much cleaner design with much better presentation of images from the get go.

Also the 'extra cost' features from 500px include things like Google Analytics and domain redirection, well worth paying for if you need them. It's not so much a Flickr replacement as a dedicated portfolio site with blogging features and some community-oriented bits.

I hardly call this:
http://500px.com/cyberguss

Any better then this:
http://torontophotoclub.ca/MetrixX

No adverts to be found.

Personally or professionally I wouldn't consider either site suitable for a portfolio if that is the intended use.

No ads? You missed the large Henry's banner ad across the top of your page? Sure there's no ad if you're running an ad-blocker but most don't. It stands out quite noticeably as the bright colours offset the low-contrast site design at torontophotoclub.ca

As to design, the 500px page has more legible type, larger thumbnails and a simpler, cleaner menu bar.

With regards to using it as a portfolio, the paid version of 500px is themeable and brandable (including removing 500px branding).

Note my initial comment was in regards to the site front page, not member sites. torontophotoclub.ca's member pages are better than the front page.

Free to individual users. From my understanding multi-user accounts, which are necessary to integrate into a site like 500px, are not free (but not expensive either). And competing sites do not offer a comparable feature (Flickr's the closest with its Stats package, but that's not as flexible or reliable as Analytics).
