#2 is very cool. We saw lots of lighting like that, but we were on the road.

one easy way is to use CHDK scripts once you get a location with good view to a tunderstorm in progress:

To be honest, there was so much activity ... I'm sure there will be a lot more photographers with some good shots. I had the camera on the tripod, manual mode, manual focus, and high drive mode. I just stood there with finger on the shutter button and hoped my reaction time was fast enough. I missed 2 really good opportunities though.

I wish I knew someone who lived in a high level condo, would be awesome to get a view as the store rolls in ... a place that has a rooftop set-up.

This was from last summer. I was too lazy to take photos last night though I'm now wishing that I did.

High drive mode? Finger on the shutter hoping for reaction times as fast or faster than the speed of light?

Why not just leave your shutter open? Looks like that's what you did for the two shots posted so not sure what you mean by your post.

I thought about doing some lightning shots last night... but then I spent an hour of that storm trying to keep the leak that my windows developed in check. *sigh*

To capture lightning the easy way just open set the apteture hight like 10-12...then set the exposure time to 30 seconds or bulb....

Then wait for the flash....

Sweet, that's a great shot. Now I have to get out near the lake for the next storm.

Lighting came out well in this one ... would've been cool to see it if you had taken it outside.

Thought about getting one, but if its triggered by flashes, then even the non fork lightning will trigger (behind the cloud stuff that we don't really see).

that's exactly what people who used those say, but with digital it just means a lot of deleting

wow that's a fantastic shot. i love the dynamic range of lights and colours! well done. weren't you scare of getting your equipment soaked? it was quite a torrential storm.

Correct. The exposure times are from 1/15s to 1/20s I believe at ISO 400. I would've like to increase the aperture, put it at ISO 100 and keep the shutter open longer, but the battery was on very low and didn't have the other batteries on me.

Not really, since I ran out right as soon as the rain stopped, I was a little afraid to come out before, since this was pretty much very close to the epicentre of the storm, I got another one from a window, but it's not as good as these due to heavy rain and crappy view  Thunderstorms are one of my most beloved things in life

by the time I realized that I should be shooting the storm and not just staring at it from my window I was a little late and the brunt of it had already passed. Also, I was definitely too chicken to go out there in that weather.

Always interesting to look through what you shoot. In this case, you can see tendrils of lightning hitting the neighbours front yard!
