I helped a friend out the other day and clicked some photos for his jewelry store at no charge because we go way back. Now, he wants me to do another one and had agreed to pay a reasonable price.

These photos will be used on his website and photo galleries. A couple of prints may be taken on brochures, flyers, etc

What would be a reasonable price to charge for something like this? Ive looked up stock photo websites and they're all over the place. I can't get a decent idea.

I'd like to get input from someone in the business or doing something similar. I don't want to overcharge him either but I do want to make some money too.

Thanks in advance

for a good friend, second time around... I would:

1- set a rate based on the numbers of hours you think will take you to accomplish the task OR
2- have him cover all your expenses (studio, rentals, transport, parking, lunch) and a small fee for your time OR
3- exchange/barter your services for a product (i.e. a nice ring for the lady )

my two cents & good luck!

Good advice, thanks!

What I am still trying to find out is an actual dollar value of what the industry charges for these things.

Thanks ;)

you won't find it, as every photographer seems to charge whatever they want. Stock agencies sell off licenses for $1, so it might not be a good reference. Just think how much you want. If it's $50 for a set then tell your friend that you usually charge $100, but for him it's half the price

PotatoEYE is right. is hard to call "stock" as you're obviously doing commissioned work. Stock would actually be something generic...any type of store or jewelry store or ring or "diamond ring"etc, not his/her jewelry store.

If you're looking at prices I charge min $350 for 2 hours work; from there on I charge between 100 -150 per hour depending on the type of assignment.

I had a deal, with a machinist who did vintage and custom work, for $20.00 per shot. The pieces were delivered to me and I would ship them back, at his cost. Probably not viable with jewellery, unless it's costume, but maybe it'll inform your rates.
