I recently got a 3DS and one of the big features (apart from it being able to display 3D images without glasses) is that it has a 3D camera. It's not a good camera, as in, it's got fixed focus, it's low resolution, and doesn't handle moving subjects well.

But for a lot of people, this is going to be their first exposure to 3D photography. I noticed that while the photos that it can take aren't very good, they do a pretty good job of making you feel like you're in the same room as when the photo was taken.

Sometimes the effect doesn't work though. Especially for poorly lit or close up subjects. In fact the effect can be straining on my eyes. Obviously it's partly due to the poor quality of the camera, but perhaps also due to the depth effect itself.

I wonder if anybody here has had any experience with any of the new 3D point and shoot cameras that are out there and could offer their thoughts.

While 3D is an interesting thing for photography, I don't think it'll ever become even remotely popular or widespread. While in San Francisco I went to the Museum of Modern Art where they had a 3D photography exhibit (photos taken in the 19th century) which showed that this has been something people have been thinking of for a long time (http://www.sfmoma.org/exhibitions/12).

Also I know that this is a little off topic for a photography forum, but I'm wondering if anybody has used any of those new 3D consumer camcorders. Headshots actually rents a $22k pro 3D camcorder for about $300/day (I can only imagine the security deposit though). Do you think it's a fad? Or is it here to stay?
