I am planning to go to Hamilton in the next few days to do some pollution, garbage, smoke, and mess photography looking for spots that would allow me to get fairly close to it (similar to samples I have taken in TO as attached).

I am looking for info on decent locations, and so on.

If anyone is interested there will be a room for few poeple in my car, I plan on going this weekend weather permitting.

I know that it is illegal to shoot from the piers directly across the harbour - as they are governed by the government of Canada... and there are strict warnings about it. And they do patrol apparently. I've known a few photographers that have gotten into hot water over that.

Do you mean these ones? Last time I was there they were open to the public. Has it changed?

Does anyone know any spots that are not across the harbour ;-), maybe dirthy places that are a bit away from the mecca of mess but still interesting and not causing security concerns... although I know I will hear the "since 9/11 ......" BS from security guys.

I am pretty sure that the Hamilton Port Authority does not allow photography on the piers without permission. It is technically private property. Although I couldn't find a specific reference to their rules - I do know of a photographer that was asked to leave.

it was a plain pier without any fences or any references to any kind of restrictions, lots of people walk through it, signs of campfires as well

I would love to shoot the coal piles closer then the pier but have been unable to find an access point. Also Hamilton has plenty of derelict building frequented by urban explorers.

Hey Peter, as i live here and have shot down there a few times, I'd say try taking the streets that run north off of Burlington St (which is an exit from QEW). Particularly Strathhearne has some interesting vantage points. There are also a number of driveways that you can get into from Strathhearne but they are private property....you could plead dumb and say sorry, right? ;)

The Piers that I think people are talking about are the ones that are located along Eastport Drive. Pier 25 or 26 (i think) had a great vantage point right across from the Stelco complex...it's now well signed that you shouldn't be there. Piers under the Burlington Skyway are still accessible and ok.

Thanks for the invite and the ride. Too bad the pier was closed because of construction.

Thanks Ryan for coming, having a tour leader and a company made visiting North Pole more enjoyable ;-).

Too bad most interesting areas are not accessible, but you do what you can ;-).
