a few things:

1- i like the fact that Vivian's work gets it's appreciation, even though she has passed on. There are some nice stuff there.

2 - man, if anyone in the future goes through my harddrive, there will be lots of garbage pictures in there for any one keeper, LOL

3 - it must be weird for the guy who bought the negatives. Guy wanted to be a 'photographer' or was interested in taking good photos before, but now, he is spending YEARS sorting through someone else's work and putting her work on display at galleries, etc. I'm not sure how satisfying that will be at the end of the day, working so hard at promoting another person's work, whom you've never met.

He's trying to make money off of the work - producing a documentary film and wants to publish the work (he has every right to unless or until a next of kin surfaces and tries to enforce copyright) - unlikely as my understanding is that he's been in touch with Maier's estate. Doubt that he'll make much money though. He really should find a gallery/museum that has the resources and expertise to process, archive, print and contextualize Maier's body of work.

He sold a bunch of negatives a year or two ago to my friend via ebay (she's a collector and printer), this was before he realized what he was sitting on because he subsequently has tried to buy back the negatives.

In a time when there are more photographers than ever, the only ones becoming famous are either too old or dead. Fred Herzog and Vivian Maier are good examples of this phenomena.

Some great photos in there indeed. The numbers of years that she covered is quite awesome of itself.
I'd be interested to see more!

Very inspirational. Made me actually got off my lazy butt and get into trying and learning street photography. Can't wait for the second volume seeing that the photos on the book is just the tip of the iceberg!

Sure! Which one? I have added the first one to my Chapters wish list but read a few reviews about blank pages and heavy handed sepia that prevented me from ordering.

I have the original one (and yes there are a couple of blank pages - glad it is not just mine!) but wasn't a big deal to me as I got it free as a gift from work. I'll bring it along next time we meet up.

J.

you seem to be way too interested for someone bashing street photography all the time

It was more a polite thank you than displaying interest in creeper photography. :P

Edit: to be fair I looked at a bit of her stuff when I stumbled across it recently and liked some of it. What I found more interesting about it was how it all came about. Considering, allegedly, I work in the field of records management it's fascinating to see stuff like this happen.

Ownership of her work is not exactly cut and dried.

http://gapersblock.com/ac/2013/08/13/th ... copyright/

Wonder which works Bulger Gallery is showing, Maloof or Goldstein. And tbh, I'm a bit uncomfortable with someone profiting from her work, it just seems like two of the three are trying to 'out Maier' the other.. If the profits or proceeds from any sales/shows were to go to a non profit, that would be more digestible, kinda. ymmv
