Bought a E-Pl1 for my wife this evening at Henry's in New Market. I should have checked it out more thourghly in the store. Turned the camera on and d/m/y flashed up on the screen, OK, put in a new card, took first photo and the last 4 digits of the filename is 0240, not 0001. The sales person had said as he took down the last box they had from the shelf "new camera nver been used. My a__. I will be taking the camera back to Henry's in Barrie tomorrow for exchange. Fortunatly I am rel well known there.

The shot count indicated by the number in the filename is about what I might take, out for an afternoon shooting.

Any one had any hassles taking a camera back to Henry's in this type of situation?

I've never had a single one of my new Olympus cameras start at 0001 for the first shot. They test shoot them and don't reset either the shot number, nor the shutter count.

It might have been used as a demo, but the shot number doesn't necessarily tell you so.

Do you recall what the initial shot numbers were, less than 10, or over a hundred?

Less than 100, in my case, but several Olympus users on DPReview have reported hundreds on brand new cameras. The assumption is that a small number of bodies are pulled for more intensive testing.

Having read Olympus forums for many years and hearing about this "complaint" time and time again, the test actuations have varied between 100 and 300, so your count of 240 is not unreasonable. Like Rob I've never known an Oly camera that started at 0001!

Personally I think it's great that Olympus tests the camera so much before it leaves the factory!

Note though that putting in a card that was used in another Olympus camera can muck up the counter/folder number, as the camera when powered up reads the last used picture/folder number, and will update the camera's picture/folder number depending on what was read from the card!
