In order to cut costs(NG cut a lot of costs in the last few years, including VERY VERY talented staff photographers) they have people serching Flickr and other sites for images they need in publications. It's cheaper for them to give a credit(free...) than pay someone to actually go to the location and take the needed photos. Most people are so flattered,NG gets a lot of images for free. If you do get contacted again and are ok with giving away your photos, at least try to negotiate how the credits are shown. You can also negotiate your payment as they have standard rates they pay for pictures.
Other than that, congrats. I know how it feels to be published there...

He did say he got paid.

Congratulations Phil! I agree with Taylor in that your travel photography is well beyond amateur level.

National Geographic is a great mag and big congrats first and foremost for getting chosen. On the flip-side, I would be willing to guess Flickr gets more exposure than NG so I hope they gave you a little something  After all, its the photos that sell the magazine.

Thanks all around for all the kind words.

For the record, I WAS paid. They never once asked for the image for free. So I am surprised if they ask others for photos for free. After all. you'd think I'd fit the profile of someone that would give a photo to them for free. But never once did they suggest it. They supplied me with a license agreement that paid them to use it locally (North American edition), Internationally and also for internet use. They paid for all 3 uses. And I get paid whether they choose to use all 3 uses. I was led to believe it was a standard contract - it listed the price they pay for different uses i.e. the price they'd pay if it were to be used on the cover locally, on the cover internationally. They told me it was their intention only to run it as a half page photo, which earns less money than a centerfold or full page usage. The local edition chose not to run the story because they can use more pages for ads than the international version (I guess we North Americans are more accepting of ads). So they decided to make more money by running an ad instead of running the story with my photo (what nerve! ).
What NG is doing makes sense from their point of view. Why pay someone to travel to Easter Island as well as pay for the photo when there are hundreds of such images easily located on Flickr? Luckily I had a shot that had documentary value for a story they were running. I am surprised that they didn't find something satisfactory on a stock image catalogue. The accompanying photo on that story came from Associated Press stock company - AP Images.

National Geographic? I heard of them before.
WOW!! Your feet probably haven't touched the ground yet. I can't imagine how it feels. Heck, I'll be happy when I take a photo worthy of being posted on this board, let alone NG.
What a thrill that would be. Well I noticed your Flickr site and I knew this before you told us here. Surely you knew for quite a while and you kept that a secret for so long. Don't let the success go to your head and don't stop posting your photos.

Congrats, I've never even been to the Pacific yet, never mind Easter Island.

PS
Congrats on getting published too. If it were me, I'd own a 100 copies of that issue by now.

Wow. Congratulations philmar. That's quite a honour. I liken getting published in NG to playing in the Olympics. Many wish, many aspire but few do. Not winning a medal but being able to say you participated. As one who'd love to be in NG I do see the irony that such an honour was bestowed upon someone not aspiring to get anywhere in to the industry (if memory serves me right).
Obviously they had a world of statue head shots to choose from but choose yours. There is something different about it. Most of the shots try to fill as many of the statues in as possible so there's too much sky. Yours has the nice compositional element of symmetry. Luckily one of them had the top hat of course.
How do you feel about the shot they chose? This is not intended to be any slight but I think you have much more interesting shots in your Flickr gallery than that one.
At least you'll be able to end any flame war in this group by stating "...but what do I know? I've only been published in National Geographic"
Cheers!

I think that I need a reality check because I'm more jealous of you for the trip, than for the publishing of your shots

HA your photo caused me a bit of angst recently.

I was back home in England for the holidays and leafing through some of the mags that my family had lying around. I inadvertently came across your photo - forgetting where I'd seen it first. It caused me a bit of grief as I was certain I'd seen it before and I rarely get that sensation when reading NG. Then it all clicked in.

I noticed you haven't posted in a while. On a long trip to Africa in the future, I see (your EXIF data indicates 2012!!)

PM me when you return. I can send you the copy of the NG issue if you want. If not, I can give it to my dentist.

Thanks everyone.

I was on a 5 week trip to Mali and Morocco and then busy as a ...as a...I guess, busy as a bee at work when I got back so I haven't been around here because of that. So the "Themes" forum will once again be piling up with my images

Wow - I PM'ed you. Hope I'm not too late. I really appreciate this act of random kindness! If I'm too late them maybe I'll go get a check up at your dentist - wink wink
Yeah I somehow managed to screw up the time on my camera to a couple years in to the future. I didn't notice until I returned.

They provided me with 2 copies of the UK edition. And a cheque in US dollars that I was having a hard time figuring out how to cash - a cheque whose value decreased as a result of the plummeting US dollar.

Sure enough once the cheque was cashed the US dollar became more valuable thanks to internationl concern over the Arab liberation movements.
