I'm about to head out for a longer vacation and will be spending nearly two weeks in Germany's Bavarian region. I've got an itinerary set for siteseeing, etc, but I'm curious if anyone has come across any particular photo opportunities that are worth pursuing that don't happen to be the various popular touristy places I'll likely visit.

Just to give you an idea, I'll be in the following areas:
- Dresden
- Chemnitz (attending MotoGp races at the Sachsenring circuit!)
- Munich
- Fuessen
- Stuttgart
- Frankfurt

I'll have a rental car the entire time so mobility is a non-issue.

Munich has some splendid museums including the BMW museums. Also the Rococo architecture is definitely worth a look at.

Frankfurt is too industrial for me but a good point to fly into and pick up a rental car. Nearby Heidelberg is worth a day, there is a path in the hills and forests that winds around the outside perimeter of the town which I'm sure will give you some photo ops.

If you don't like to spend money on hotels most German cities have small business hotels that are a few minutes from city centre, simple, very clean and reasonably priced.

Thanks for the tips everyone.

I'm doing something similar, Metrix. Instead of flying into Frankfurt, I'm flying out of Frankfurt after dropping off the rental car there.

Bavaria wasn't my cup of tea compared to the rest of the country. Found the locals to be a tad too conservative but the food and beer was spot on. Metrix is right - Frankfurt should be avoided - it's an industrial and financial centre that as you surmised rates only dropping a car off in.
I didn't fancy Dresden as it was largely rebuilt after the war when it was leveled by the Brits and Yanks. It isn't a bad place but with 2 weeks I'd concentrate on other places.
A MUST see is the castle at Neuschwanstein. Utterly beautiful. Google it. I rate it highly.

There's a lovely Gothic church and town of Nordlingen. K

I went for beer.:D

Guess I'd have to admit to the same since I've only been to Munich and didn't make it out of the beer gardens (Oktoberfest).
