I subscribe to Lightroom Killer Tips and Matt recently had a post talking about the good things of converting your RAW fils to the open DNG format. So my question is who here uses DNG and what are your thoughts? Pros? Cons?

I like the idea of open standards but as it is DNG is still not future/platform proof.

If many more companies would've adopted it, may the situation was different. As of today only Adobe promotes/support it. Everyone else is of little consequence in this market.

I have been thinking of converting to DNG but I don't like the hit I take in increased storage requirements if I am to embed the original raw file in the DNG file. Keeping the original RAW file is the only way you can have some assurance nothing will go terribly wrong with your work.

my couple of year old PP software (CS2) does not support my more current body (a900). as such i need to convert my raws to DNG in order to be able to PP them.

i believe they are future proof enough. they're an accepted standard, more body vendors are adding native dng support, and any current/future PP software should be able to open them since they're open-standard.

i don't see a point in embedding the original RAW file in the DNG file because it's guaranteed that in 2-3 years time the PP software of the day won't be able to open that RAW file anyways.

That's what kills me about Adobe, they could very easily add the raw conversion to CS2/3 for newer camera, they do it to their DNG converter, so it should be fairly trivial. They don't to force people to either upgrade or use the aforementioned DNG converter. Annoys me.

That being said, I've only used DNG sparingly so don't really have a driving need to convert my Nikon raw to it. Other than duplicating the files, I'm not sure what the short term benefits are. Long term it may be a better idea, assuming that Adobe or someone supports the version of DNG you actually converted.
