Hey,
I'm selling prints and postcards at a small juried craft fair next weekend. I guess it's aimed mostly at students, and the prices are relatively low.. The postcards I'm selling are not souvenir style postcards you can get at the drugstore. I was wondering if anyone has sold postcards before and how much they've charged for them? non-artists have told me to sell them for no more than $2, while other artists have told me to charge $5-7. The printing costs are just about the same (30 or so cents each) as the 4x6 prints I'm selling for $10.. however, it takes a hell of a lot more time to print postcards as I have to lay them out in indesign and cut them. Thoughts?

I assume these are photo postcards? What I suggest is showing a retail price of $4.99 and putting it on sale for $2.99 -- everyone likes to think they got a deal. :)

hmmm.... most post cards are mass produced and sold in store's for very little money, although the art world is a little different. I'd try pricing them at $3 ea. and see if they sell. Typically I give away my art postcards as they are used to advertise my work. and I sell my greeting cards at $4.50 ea. and prints are anywhere from $20 and up.

Yeah, sorry photo postcards. More 'fine arty' than souvenir postcards

Price them at a higher rate because it's easier to reduce the price to match the other artist than it is to increase it. Also if your work is some what better than the rest, you could justify the higher price to your customers.

Good Luck

I think I'm probably going to be the only photographer there? I may be wrong, but I think they're just looking for only one of each 'type' of artist there.. there will probably only be maybe five other people selling at the same time as I..

Not necessarily a good idea, because pricing your product too high will turn customers away.

And from my personal experience, things like art post cards do not sell nearly as well as greeting cards do. People really like greeting cards - they have been my #1 seller in my 4 years of art sale experience.
